Sitting here eating flaxseed crackers with a glass of almond milk at the moment, so interesting to
open this thread, and see it is about
eating flaxseeds.
For well over a year, I have been eating a 1/4 cup(before grinding) of flaxseeds every day, which I grind myself. Lately that has increased, some days to 1/2 cup, mostly ground, a little bit of whole seeds, too.
No adverse effects to report. Haven't died of cyanide poisoning yet, and until I started making the crackers, was only eating the ground seeds raw.
Beyond that, I am on a low, low, low carb diet. Sugar? What's that? lol
Also, I'm going with high fat and moderate protein. When you are on a super low carb diet, your body is starved for glucose, which happens to be what cancer cells live on. However, your body can make glucose on its' own, making it out of protein by a process in your liver, called gluconeogenesis. Consequently, too much protein, to a significant degree, defeats the purpose of the low carb diet, which is to switch your metabolism from using glucose for energy to using ketone bodies (also produced by the liver). Your body uses fat to produce ketone bodies to fuel your body. That is the basis of the ketogenic diet, which is high fat, very low carb, and moderate protein.
You can't live without eating protein. Too little is bad, too much is not good. All carbs are bad, eventually, sooner or later, although for most people under 40, it doesn't matter much, and they can get a lot of energy from carbs.
Fat is a whole other subject. But when I say a high fat diet is good, I am only talking about
healthy fats, mainly raw olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, etc. Cooking fat under a high heat creates carcinogens, so only coconut oil which stands up well at high temperatures is OK for frying/sauteeing.
Currently, I am eating meat. Was not eating it for almost 2 years, but, as nuts and seeds (too much calcium oxylate and phytic acid) were my main source of protein, and I got kidney stones (OUCH!), I have added meat as a source of protein, eating approx. 3 oz per day, mostly red meat, trying to stay away from chicken/eggs/dairy, cannot eat shell fish, as it makes me violently ill. But I do eat some goat yogurt, and small amounts of sheep cheese (romano and feta).
Have not yet had a chance to look at the Dr. Greger video, but will watch it, and will look at some other sources sited on this thread, as well.
