Hi People
so my husband is constantly miserably itchy. I know in the grand scheme of cancer, this seems like a minor issue, but it's really bothering him and starting to scare me. He is a mass of scabs all over his body, he often has some location of his arms or legs bleeding (his skin is really thin now), I find him tangled up in his tee shirts in his sleep because he's must have been trying to reach odd itchy spots.
We've tried Benadryl (oral and the spray gel), prescription steroids and antihistamines, over the counter and prescription lotions, switching to perfume-free detergents...nothing has really made a dent.
It's definitely a major quality of life issue for him, so if anyone has other suggestions, please let me know.
My other question is about causes or the meaning of this. Initially I thought this was an allergic reaction to taxotere. He was on taxotere for several months without this itching; it came on pretty suddenly about a month to 6 weeks ago. But I know allergic reactions can appear at any time. So maybe that's what it is.
But today I started worrying that this is a sign of liver problems. He had a scan in the summer that showed what are presumably mets to his liver. He had a scan at the very end of 2015 that showed the same things, a little larger than they had been previously, but not lit up at all on the PET. So I think this means he has liver mets but at least at the last peek, they aren't active (I wish I could say more decisively -- no one discusses it, no one seemed to have any interest in biopsying -- but this is my take based on reading radiology reports).
His last PSA was amazing. It had started climbing, making me think the taxotere was no longer working, and then for no reason (no therapy change), it dropped by 46% in two weeks. So that's great, but has no relationship to how he feels. If anything he is feeling worse lately, starting to feel back pain again, etc.
His eyes don't look yellow to me, so I don't think he's jaundiced.
So that's what I think is relevant info. If you've dealt with this, or have any perspective on it, I'd welcome advice and thoughts as to whether this is a bad sign for taxotere, or his liver, or both.
thanks in advance
