On the subject of hammers and screwdrivers, I recall the adage that suggests that when all one has is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. One of my favorite Biblical metaphors is about beams and specks, and suggests that one should remove the beam from one's own eye in order to see clearly in order to remove the speck from someone else's eye. I also heard, in a very different context, that I can spot it, I've probably got it-which means that if I can spot a flaw in someone else, it's probably because I have it myself and know what it looks like.
Introspection is not a bad thing, unless one sits down and wallows in self-pity and regret. Does the shoe fit?
