Had a meeting with surgeon yesterday for hernia. He told me it may be complicated due to placing mesh in area of prostate surgery and radiation. Anyone have similar experiences?

Yup, was told the same thing. Had and open procedure as a result.

DH had 3 hernias repaired laparoscopically last July after having AUS surgery 15 months earlier. RRP and radiation had been the year before that. The first surgeon we saw didn't want to perform the procedure so we found a hernia specialist where the urologist who installed the AUS operates. They conferred and even though we had been advised that an open procedure was still a possibility, the doctor was able to avoid that. DH never even took the prescribed pain killer afterwards, only ibuprofen. The recovery went more smoothly than we could have hoped. Our advice: find the best skilled surgeon you can. It can be done robotically even with all the tubing/paraphernalia of an AUS. Best to you for a quick recovery.

For hernias lapriscopic surgery is not necessarily the best way to go. The incision for an open hernia operation is small to begin with. I had an inguinal hernia fixed with mesh three years back. I was assuming the surgeon was going to do it lapriscopicly. The surgeon (who does both) suggested open as he can see better and place the mesh better.

Almost no pain after the operation and three weeks after the operation no restriction on activities. For any hockey fans out there back in the 70's Ed VanEmpt of the Phila Flyers played in a Stanley Cup series a week or two after mesh surgery. That's tge first I heard or mesh being used.

Thanks for earlier replies. Just had open hernia surgery last Thursday, surgeon told my wife he couldn't perform lapriscopic due to scarring from prostate surgery and radiation. Normally, he would also check my other side to see if I had a double hernia, but he said he couldn't do that due to scarring as well. These procedures are making it easier and easier for junior to win at Hide and Seek. :(

I was told the same thing about the open procedure.

As I recall, jr. didn't come out to play for a few weeks post surgery.

I remember the first week post surgery to be the worst and then things magically resolved and I was back to a normal schedule quickly.
