In honor of the Olympics, I did some quick and dirty scoring of 3 prostate pathologists, Epstein, Bostwick and Reuter. I did a pubmed search for the number or prostate pathology papers each has written or co-authored.
Epstein's papers Bostwick's papersReuter's papersThe score is:
Epstein: 773
Bostwick: 279
Reuter: 152
Now, I know a better judge would factor in such things as the Impact Factor of the journal, how often the article was cited in Google Scholar, whether it was
about pathology or just mentioned it, and how influential it was in changing prostate pathology practice. I recognize that there is a subjective factor (points for artistic achievement), but we know that concordance indices increase with practice. Bostwick has been doing it longer and probably has more practice, but he has also left the company he founded (but his well-trained staff, including Kahane is still there), so, I'll judge that those factors cancel out. Pending adjustments to the score based on the above factors (which I suspect would increase scores for both Epstein and Bostwick), I would award the "Gold Standard" to Epstein. *the crowd roars*
