When micro mets are discovered in bones or organs which area is more troublesome,
if anyone has experienced this?

micromets in either would be the same...once fully roosted...the bone pain would...like really hurt more...I suppose.

Bone mets can be painful once developed.

Organ mets can be deadly once developed.

The effect of mets will depend on a lot of factors, but all are bad. As to PSA, it too is individualistic based on what the PCa has become. We see some with PSA in the thousands that successfully treat mets for many years. On the other hand, a friend fought mets for seven years and finally passed from small cell PCa in the lung. His PSA was never over 10.

Hi Diane,

My husband was DX. with a PSA of 6.3. He had RP and we found that his PCa had already escaped as his
PSA was never undetectable. What Dr.s look for is the doubling time of PSA rises.

My husband was in a trial for this particular type of Pet scan called F-18/ with Sodium Floride. which found 1 Met was found in his T-11 spine. He then started on HT.

Most traditional scans usually don't find any progression until the PSA reaches more than 10-20 .
Read what JNF posted above, each man's PCa is individual.

Just a technicality, but they are not "micromets" if they have been seen on any kind of imaging before a confirmatory biopsy.

In general, remote organ PC, except lungs and excluding stage T4, spreads more quickly; bone PC less quickly, and lymph node-only PC, the least quickly.

For what it is worth, I had my prostate and 3 bone mets taken out by SBRT 5 years ago with no recurrence to prostate or bone. However, my G9 has now spread to the lining of the right lung (pleural effusion and nodes).

Tall Allen, are you saying PC in the lungs does NOT spread quickly? Or vice versa.

The last I saw about this was based on recent clinical trial data on overall survival among men who had used docetaxel, and were metastatic and castration resistant. It was about median overall survival and not prostate cancer-specific survival. As you can see, median survival with lung mets was similar to survival with bone mets.

lymph node only mets - 31.6 mos.
bone or bone with LN (but no visceral) -21.3 mos.
any lung (but no liver) - 19.4 mos.
any liver - 13.5 mos.

Hi Diane,

Actually our Urologists was almost certain it was confined until he had his first PSA.

Most Dr's wanted us to do radiation but something told me not to., I thought it had already escaped.
That's when we were in a trial at Stanford who confirmed his met. to his t-11 spine.

We did not have a second opinion on his slides, as we panicked and just wanted his prostate out.
Can't look back but don't know if radiation would have been beneficial, but I guess not.

To clarify:

Our Oncol. thought it was organ confined as he didn't see any cancer in any of the lymph nodes he examined.However Dr's can't see if it had escaped in blood .
This is why Dr's hold their opinions until the first PSA post surgery, which in our case was 6 weeks after.
his first PSA was 1.4 or something like that.
He re-tested his PSA 2 weeks later and it had doubled.

Our Oncologists told us he probably had cancer for more than 10 years before he was DX.
As far as symptoms go, he had pain in his testes after we had intercourse which brought us to our Dr.

Often there are no symptoms and husband was only 53 when DX. His PSA was high around 7 but never over that.
So you can see each man 's journey as his own and you have to make a plan and jump in to fight this beast.
You sound like a good wife with questions and support, so stay positive and ask away.

Can someone tell me what "mets" means on this site? I've been presuming it means metastasis, or referring to cancer that had moved from the prostate to others organs or the bones. Close?

Yes that is what mets. mean metastasis.
If you go to the prostate page look for the heading abbreviations it's the second title down.
It will give you abbreviations for terms that people use on this site.

It is confusing J+D...because the majority of urologists have no idea how to stage pca...medicos do better up the food chain...urologists...even surgeons{non oncologist's} do not...not surprising... think of any institution that you have had any interface...and tell me they are not bouncing off each other routinely..and it ain't ideas...but face saving blather...don't misunderstand me...I do not have a negative view of the world...au contraire...be cause I understand it so well...I am able to to transfigure it in to its real beauty{for myself at least...and no not a pollyanna...a realist to da max}..to the point of it not being recognizable...but well realized... I could say more but must self censure myself...on some things...even things permissable...the light...the light...read Platos allegory of the cave sometimes...or not...Boogee has given you good advice...
