2 inch Tumor Leison in a Hip - Can it heal with hormones or radiation?

Hello Band of Brothers,

Although this is only my second post, I was reading quite a bit since 2013 when I came accross this forum.

YOU GUYS ROCK! Never lose the hope and are the greatest support to each other and newly diagnosed. My deep respect and kudos to all of you.

My husband's doctor (Snuffy Myers) from Virginia 2013 quote when Tim started with him:

"Tim has 2 issues that may or may not be related. First, he has elevated PSA post surgery with doubling time slower than 2 years. The second issue is that he has a lytic bone lesion that enhances with contrast on MRI. Lytic bone leisons can be seen with prostate cancer, but quite uncommon. Further this leison has increased modestly since 2009, while lytic bone leisons from prostate cancer would typically be much more aggressive."

As of 9/14/2016 Tim's orthopedist, who was treating him for hip/back pain (3 buldging discs in lubmar section), said that thew MRI showed a tumor leison in the hip bone where the bone marrow was replaced by tumor and the size is 5 x 4 x 3 centimeters. Tim is going for the hip biopcy and then we will find out what it is. To provide more details, Tim has osteoartritis in the hip, but not too bad and his orthopedist said that he has some kind of inflamation in the hip (from cancer?)

I am wondering if any of you or know someone with the similiar situation?

I am familiar with the concept of PSA negative agents when cancer doesn't produce much PSA, so I am hypothesizing that even if Tim has a low PSA (0.46 currently) the cancer might have escaped the prostate caplule and nested in the hip?

The secondary question I have, can 5 cm (2 inch) bone leison be healed with whether hormone therapy or radiation?

I would really appreciate any feedback & thoughts.

I can't help ya but I like the slow psa rise...ive been hovering at ) 0.14 to .15 for over a year plan no tx till pain..if then...Im done with psa tests...Im not messen with HT...what... so I get more years to worry if Im going to die with or without pca...is it a badge of honor to do either? Warning...Do not try this at home...reasons are specific to me and my self knowledge{ what me worry }..."No guts...no glory...a case of do or die " Just picture Slim Pickens In Dr Strangelove...riding the bomb...wawhoo...aahoo..wavin the cowboy hat..flappen in da wind...

Im saying lesion is NOT related to Pca... but thats me...Don't get too many chefs in the kitchen would be my advice also.

Test your psa and get a shot. QOL matters.

And if you don't wanna know what your psa is (I understand that one)...then just get the shot. If it were given to ya while you were asleep you'd probably never even know you'd gotten one.

I do not know. My GUESS is that any PCa bone cancer can be "healed" with radiation. The bone would obviously have to heal and I've never dealt with what radiation does to the healing process of bones. I don't know...I'm kinda feelin' as if that's not what this is Neyme. I don't know why I feel that way. We're just speculating though... When is the biopsy?

We just found out about the lesion in the hip last Tuesday. Dr. Myers is in the process of setting up the biopsy in some of our local (MN) clinics - I don't know the date yet. Hopefully sometimes this or next week.

I guess I have some anxiety about this newly discovered bone lesion....and since my husband doesn't like to talk too much about this, I needed to chat through with someone who is in the same PC boat. :) You know us women....we like to talk. ;)

I'll definitely keep you posted.

I didn't comment because I (and you) do not yet know what that lesion is. Radiation, chemo and hormone therapy shrink blastic bone mets, but if they will work on lytic bone mets may depend on exactly what kind of tumor it is - some are radiation/hormone/chemo-resistant, some are responsive. I know you are eager to treat it because it is causing him pain. Soon, you will know better how to do that.

Prostate cancer bone mets are almost always blastic - that means there is bone overgrowth or sclerosis at the tumor. Other kinds of cancer, like lung cancer, have lytic bone mets - that means the bone tissue gets dissipated by the tumor. Other kinds of cancer, like breast cancer sometimes, have a mixed type - both things occur in bones with tumors. It's rare to have a lytic bone met with prostate cancer - so they really have to see what kind of rare subtype it is.
