After my surgery I had intermittent problems with retention and multiple trips to the ER to have the catheter put back in. Overall my situation is not very similar to yours, but I found that when I was having trouble urinating, and the effort to pee made it worse, a cough could help relax the muscles and let the pee flow.
If you find that you are completely blocked, head for the doctor or the ER early. Retention gets very painful, supposedly up there with childbirth and kidney stones. Don't wait until you are in agony, because it will take time for them to deal with you once you get there.
One time I was at the ER, laying on the table in considerable pain, and the nurse was going through a list of questions. One was: "Do you feel you are in danger at home?" Then: "Do you want to hurt anyone?" I avoided giving the obvious answer because that would only have delayed things further.
Good luck!
