Hi Everyone
Hope you're all doing great.
Just thought I would share this with y'all in case anyone's interested. I know a lot of guys are keen on supplements, and I've certainly done my fair share of research about
the whole thing, for my GG.
I was speaking with a nutritional scientist last week, who pointed me to a study which was only published a few days ago. It is entitled "The Essential Medicinal Chemistry of Curcumin" and is a mini perspective. By Kathryn M. Nelson, Jayme L Dahlin, Jonathan Bisson, James Graham, Guido F Pauli, and Michael A. Walters - Dept of Medicinal Chemistry, Institute for Therapeutics Discovery and Development, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; Dept of Pathology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston; and Centre for Natural Product Technologies, Dept of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, College of Pharmacy, University of Illinois.
I'd attach it here, but unsure how to upload a PDF.
I can, however give you all an abstract, which reads: "No double-blinded, placebo controlled clinical trial of curcumin has been successful. This manuscript
reviews the essential medicinal chemistry of curcumin and provides evidence that curcumin is an unstable, reactive, nonbioavailable compound and, therefore a highly improbable lead.:" You should be able to find this report on line, if you simply do a bit of googling.
The scientist I was speaking with said that sulforaphane (in the form of broccoli sprouts) was a better bet than curcumin, and far more bioavailable. She warned however, of claims from shonky operators stating their product was "organic', when it may have started off that way, but had been highly irradiated before being turned into capsules! Eek...
I've been advised that a large amount of the curcumin currently available, has been extracted using hexane and/or class 1 solvents - a nasty business. Unfortunately, traces (and in some cases) quite large amounts of these solvents have been found in these supplements; thereby negating any possible good you may glean from the product itself. Not only that, but a lot of the curcumin products are synthetic, and not even derived from real turmeric at all - the supplements business is a minefield and you have to do your research very thoroughly.
It's taken me ages to work out which supplements are clean (well... as far as possible), don't have any nasty additives, and don't use any potentially harmful manufacturing processes. I'm not about
to post any recommendations here for obvious reasons (and no - I'm not in the business myself!), but please everyone do your homework super thoroughly if you're going to take any supplements at all - ask questions of the manufacturer; i.e. how have they extracted the content you are about
to ingest, using what type of process, and ask to see their chemical residue and heavy metals reports for each product. Also ask if the product has been irradiated during the manufacturing process, as they will sneak this one under the radar.
May the force be with you.
Jaybee
