Even though this is a couple of years old...it is still largely relevant. Particularly his data about longevity and screening. PC is survivable for many years, if caught and treated appropriately. Using 10 years as the benchmark is too short.

Also, his comments about population statistics as opposed to individual situations, and the discussions about prevention, vitamin E, and selenium are particularly important and largely ignored by the popular press and the supplement industry. (or worse, reversed and trumpeted as truth)

Thanks for posting that study. Walsh is a leader in the field of prostate surgery, and his data and conclusions make for good reading.

Thanks for posting. Very interesting.
But, there was very little discussion of radiation treatment.
Do you know of any similar, authoritative presentation that does include radiation outcomes?

So vitaminE/selenium/vitaminC supplements and multi vitamins, bad or of no value?
Also Avodart, Finastride etc. do nothing to prevent or slow progression, and in fact lead to more aggresive cancer?
As always there are contradictions. Who to believe?

Thanks for bringing our attention to this lecture by one of the leaders. What struck me the most

In due time (20-30 years), there will be more deaths from prostate cancer than from breast cancer. This may sound terrible, but it isn't; the reason being that the baby boomers will be getting old. Of course this prediction is speculative (slide 19).

The risk for prostate cancer is 50% genetic and 50% environmental

The PSA testing controversy is very nicely summarized in slides 53 + 54.

I found slide 89 lacking because Dr Walsh isn't considering radiation. Yes, I know, he is a surgeon (and always will be).

More in general, please realize that this lecture is from 2014 and that there have been significant advances since then, especially with respect to radiation type therapies.

One takeaway from me.... anyone 45+, relatively healthy and a life expectancy of over 10 years or more better get a darn PSA test.
