Sorry to post this sad news and hope it's not a re-post. I did not know him but it seems he lived a full, heathy life style. I know of another ultra marathoner who died of PCa many years ago. It makes me wonder if there is a link between distance running and prostate cancer. I doubt it but makes me wonder.

Clear link...many men are runners and many get PCa. But more men are not runners and get PCa. The link is the male thing.

the link is lack of enough anti-oxidents...any sustained cardio...increases free radicals{not a 60's war chant}....rouge particles that can change cell dna once bombarded by them..."causing" multiple brands of cancer...the answer is to not decrease cardio but to increase anti-oxidents...a minimum of 30 mins of cardio...better yet 1 hour 4 to 5 times a week will make anyone feel stronger.Cardio is ...Im not getting into all the warnings about any kine of exercize its all been said many..many times. Good on Ed Whitlock for for finishing his race of life...

Uh...he was 86. That's a long life. Significantly longer than typical/average.



On the other hand, prostate cancer is ubiquitous.

Yeah, that was a long full life for sure.

Gee...all this time I have been blaming the lead, arsenic, mercury, radium, tobacco and asbestos I was exposed to and here is was my running all the time that was to blame! :biglaugh: (consider Occam's Razor)

Nah - it isn't the exercise that did it to him, Bolo. Also - those radiation treatments you are hoping will kill the cancer do that by increasing the oxidants in the cancer cells (to over-stress/overwhelm their mitochondria). If you increase the anti-oxidants in them you are helping the cancer survive the treatments you are getting to get rid of the cancer. That would be a tad counter-productive, eh?

Ed Whitlock did pass away recently at age 86, but I don't think he died of PCa. Hell it couldn't catch him. Mr. Whitlock ran his first marathon when he was 44. And I think he ran one when he was 85 in 3:56. Ed Whitlock was a real inspiration. RIP Mr. Whitlock.

trailguy...intensive cardio increases free radicles...period...antioxidents...destroy free radicles...period...this all happens before anyone even has cancer...the radiation,et al was a classic straw man argument...to win a debate that did not exist...and to show intelligence... that I never doubted till the straw man swept into a relatively clean thesis...very silly... ps simply put the link I mentioned is re. one of many causes fo cancer generally speaking...your response switched it to treatments...as if that was what I introduced...I did not...

In the meantime smiling Ed beams down on all our sillyness...chuckling as well....

Nah he don't as he is dead. Fade to black, curtain comes down and you are not anywhere anymore as you have ceased to exist.

No, exercise does not cause prostate cancer, period.

The great running Philosopher Dr. George Sheehan also passed away from PCa. His final book is a good read. He said that he ran not to prolong his life but to enrich his life, or something like that. Only a Runner would understand.
