Reluctantly joining the club

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the plethora of information that you're sharing here, I've been lurking for a while, but I think it's time to introduce myself.

During a routine physical in early January, my blood test showed that my PSA was higher than normal for a 57 year old, and rising. Three months, a few visits to the urologist, and a biopsy later, I know a lot more about Prostate Cancer than I ever did before, including the fact that I have it.

I researched a lot, both medical publications as well as a few books and, together with my wife, have come to the conclusion that SBRT would be a great treatment option for me. My RO, Dr. King at UCLA, agrees with me and today we put the wheels in motion to get this approved by my insurance.

I considered AS, but was advised against it because of the 7 positive cores and the 50% involvement.
The MRI showed a lesion very close to the prostatic capsule, so I agree it's safer to act soon.

Sorry you have to be here, but glad you've landed on a treatment and you have an excellent RO. I was also treated at UCLA, although it was combination of brachytherapy and IMRT. Good luck to you and keep us posted!

Have you considered surgery? You're at the right age. SE are different than radiation. I'd say it is a good idea to look at all treatment alternatives before making a decision.

Your pathology seems to indicate either surgery or radiation would be curative.

As the others have said. . . welcome to this little club of ours. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this, but if you must, then you've come to a great place to learn and talk about it.

I'm a bit older than you (now 69), and with maybe a bit less tumor load, but I thought about all the treatment options and chose SBRT myself. I think it is technically a good choice, and if radiation is your chosen modality, then this is one of the better ones to choose. That you are working with Dr. King only makes things better yet. I've heard nothing but good about him.

I'm only about 4 months past my last CyberKnife SBRT treatment, and I'm still dealing with some intestinal after-effects (I had issues before, this didn't help), but over-all I am quite pleased with the choice. I hope that you will be, too.

Keep us posted. As you take each step of your journey, stop by, as somebody here has probably taken that same step before and will gladly share with you their experience.
