In the body, there's the vascular system (blood) and the lymphatic system - little 'nodes' present all over the body which act as 'garbage' collectors.
I had 44 lymph nodes removed during surgery and consequently had fairly significant lymphoedma in both legs and even up into my abdomen area. I wear knee high support hose and use a
pneumatic compression garment to help squeeze the accumulated fluid back up. It's quite effective but my legs still ache.
Some women who had breast cancer surgery will also have lymph nodes removed in the area and their arms will swell due to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid. There are compression garments they wear to alleviate that swelling
