The Road to Recovery Program is a service provided by the American Cancer Society. It hooks up people who need transportation for treatment of cancer.
I am a volunteer driver for the program and a three year member of the Active Surveillance club.
Those of you who need rides for treatment can contact the program at 1-800-227-2345. We provide rides for people who cannot drive themselves due to the treatment, no drivers license, the indigent and/or homeless, any reason at all that they need transportation. I have driven all of the above categories and even blind patients.
For those of you who have time on your hands and can drive I would urge you to become a volunteer driver. You can inquire about the program and/or volunteer at https://www.cancer.org/treatment/support-programs-and-services/road-to-recovery.html.
Once you have been accepted you take a short course on the rules of the drivers and a course, if needed, on the web site we use to volunteer for individual rides. We have drivers who drive once a month and some that drive daily. Using the web site you only volunteer for rides you want. You know the address of pickup and the facility before you accept the ride. If you are not comfortable with the use of a computer you can arrange for your local coordinator to call you about rides in areas and at times you have indicated you would be willing to drive.
I have been doing this about a year and a half. It's a great way to volunteer in that you only commit for dates and times you wish. You can take time off at any time.
Please think about it if you have the time. Those on this board know how much this can mean to a patient.
Moderators, if you agree this is a good service it would be nice if this could be added to one of the pinned threads for newcomers to the board.
