Looking for seurgon, new diagnose with prostate cancer

My husband just diagnosed with PC.
Can you please Reccomend me on best the
Seurgons/ most experience seurgons for
Prostate cancer in Southern California and in the
USA?

Depending on the pathology report, he might be a candidate for radiation or surgery or active surveillance. Please read this thread first.

So the original biopsy by Cedar's Sinai said that it was Gleason 9, but Epstein at Johns Hopkins downgraded it to a Gleason 7? If that is correct, that's very good news for your husband.

Unfortunately, I myself can't make any recommendations of a surgeon, although I do live in Southern California. However, I would recommend though that besides looking for surgeons that you contact a radiation oncologist that can explain about the pros and cons of radiation via surgery. At the end of the day, surgery may be your preferred treatment method, but it's helpful to do some research first so you've covered all your bases up front. Since you're in So Cal, two of the best are at UCLA: Dr Demanes (practices brachytherapy, which is radioactive seeds) and Dr King (SBRT, which is a type of external radiation).

If your husband is a Gleason 7 your chances of a cure are equally good with surgery or radiation. If you do get a chance, please create a signature with more biopsy information, such as the number of positive cores. That will help give us a more complete picture of his diagnosis. Good luck to you!

My husband decided he will do the Robotic
Surgery. His biopsy was 4 samples from 15
Diagnose with cancer 2 slides 3/3 and 2 other
Slides 3/7, 2 other slides not confirmed
Completely as cancer.
I try to research for seurgon in California
But don't wait feel comfortable, I called
For Doctor Timothy Wilson but his phone assistant
Was very Unkind and arrogant and just put on hold
Over and over

Hello Smara and welcome. You have received some great advice already. I'll just reemphasize that just because your doctor recommended surgery does not mean it is the best choice for your husband. HE needs to get educated on our disease and understand all of his options before making a choice. As JNF said, the biggest regret we see is from men who don't take the time to look at treatment options before making a decision.

Urologists always recommend surgery. It's up to the patient to take it upon himself to seek out and meet with specialists in other kinds of therapies.

A few of the top surgeons in the LA area are Dr Aron at USC, Dr Reiter at UCLA and Dr Ahlering at UCIrvine

He should also meet with Dr King at UCLA and Dr Demanes at UCLA to hear different perspectives.

They are department chairs and my impression is that they don't do a lot of surgeries anymore. But if you can get them to agree, I'm sure they would be fine.

I don't recommend any above any of the others. I'm sure they are all excellent. Just make sure you get opinions from specialists in other therapies as well. The only patients who regret their decisions are the ones who don't make the effort to learn about the various therapies.

That is exactly the attitude that I and many other patient advocates on this forum try to guard against. It is NOT a good enough reason to not explore all suitable options just because one's urologist told them that surgery was "the only good option, or the best option." Many of us were told that, including myself. Many of us were told "I'd give you the same advice if you were my own brother/father." Almost all of us had the initial reaction to "just cut it out." (That usually fades with time and knowledge.)

The average urologist does not have enough knowledge about other therapies to advocate for or against their use. He is an expert in his therapy only. Wise patients will understand that and will not solely rely on his opinion. As empowered patients, we take charge of our own health decisions. It's your body and your life and no one else has the power to make that decision for you. You are worth making that effort for. (It only sounds judgmental if you think you are not worth making that effort for.) If you slavishly follow the opinion of one doctor, you are setting yourself up for regret later. All the surveys on regret prove that.

I am certainly not arguing against surgery as one option to explore. But I do advocate a certain process - exploring all options and participating in shared decision making. The American Urological Assn agrees with this process.

I totally agree that the newly diagnosed should slow down and explore all options. I've given that advice myself to forum newbies. And I agree that thorough research before deciding any matter of importance in one's life will help stave off regret. But I don't think most patients are wise enough to understand, e.g., the professional bias of the average urologist until someone who's been around the block points it out to them.

Since you are already familiar with Cedars Sinai, I would recommend you consult with Dr. Howard Sandler, radiation oncologist at Cedars Sinai. As I was once told by well known member of this forum, Dr. Sandler is one of the best radiation oncologists in the world. He has spent the majority of his career researching and treating prostate cancer. He will be able to give you an extremely knowledgeable opinion as to whether or not radiation would be a viable treatment option for your husband.
