Two comments for those newly diagnosed with prostate cancer--
I was diagnosed by a urologist who assumed that he was going to operate on me. Sorry! I am a medical physicist so my first thoughts were proton therapy or brachytherapy. After considering the many treatments with proton therapy and trips to the proton center, I opted for brachytherapy--and am glad I did. (I am now four months post-implant.)
Quick procedure, back and doing things the next day, no pain, no swelling, etc.
More important is that I chose Chicago Prostate Cancer Center (after getting a second opinion from the chair of urology of a major university who recommended CPCC--not his own institution).
I worked at Mayo Clinic Rochester for 20 years. In my mind Mayo practices the best medicine with their motto being "The needs of the patient come first". Their staff are outstanding, caring, competent and respectful. Their facilities are well designed and maintained. (The Mayo Building, built in 1955, looks as neat and clean as a brand new building.)
Mayo Clinic is known worldwide for its excellence in medicine, a reputation which is truly deserved.
I was amazed and quite impressed on my first visit to CPCC-- It looks like a Mayo facility and its staff treats you like you are a patient at Mayo Clinic. Everyone treats you with respect, they explain things every step of the way, and their publications are very much like the ones you find in the Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. It is clear that in the mind of CPCC and each of its staff members, "The needs of the patient come first."
Thank you, Dr. Moran and all of the staff at CPCC. I enjoyed the experience (never thought I would say that about cancer treatment!) and having you there to smile and ask what I needed!!
