Colonoscopy before PSA test...

Hi everyone...

Does anyone know if having a colonoscopy 3 days before a PSA test will effect the values of the PSA test? Thanks for any insight anyone might have...

There are actually several studies on this.

A small study from 1999 found that flexible "colonoscopy does not adversely affect serum PSA levels."

A slightly larger study from 2004 drew this conclusion: "Flexible colonoscopy affect serum PSA (free and total) levels in certain patients. Special attention must be given to those patients with PSA levels in the 'gray zone' before colonoscopy."

Finally, the latest and largest study (from 2010) found that "serum PSA levels were elevated during 7 days after colonoscopy."

Would you consider getting the PSA blood draw prior to the colonoscopy? I think that just makes it easier.

Hi ejc61...

I had the appointment for the colonoscopy for 5 months now so that date is etched in stone (I am already 3 months past due...and...had a pre-cancerous polyp the last time around...meaning...I don't want to put this off any longer). My prostate issues began to manifest in (around) September...so...this overlap has happened. My Urologist put me on 14 days of antibiotics which ends tomorrow (Colonoscopy this coming Tuesday). My Urologist wants to retest my PSA 1 week after I finish the antibiotics which will take me to next Friday. This will put me 3 days post colonoscopy. If a DRE can raise your PSA I am wondering what having someone probe in and around your prostate for 30 to 45 minutes can do? I was just trying to gather some information on whether or not I should tell my Urologist to push the PSA test into the future...say...another week or so. My feeling at this point is yes...Thank you very much for your reply...
