My wife is an RN and worked in hospitals for several years and she frequently encountered situations like yours with a family loved one at/near end of life. In many cases, the family wouldn't let go - they wanted everything possible done to prolong life. In other situations the physician was the one that would press for procedures and tests no matter how invasive and how futile.
