It has now been a little over three months since I completed my SRT and I finished my six month course of ADT in early January. Yesterday I received the results of my first 3 month post SRT PSA test. The result was again <0.008. My next PSA test is scheduled in three months.

Is a PSA test this soon after SRT very meaningful?

Just wondering why you go on tamoxifen while your psa is .008 after SRT ?isnt that chemo?

a PSA that low is a cause for a party - no matter how it got there.

At this point, one test doesn't mean much, you need to get a number of them done and see the pattern.

In the mean time, enjoy life.

Ak123- I requested and was prescribed 20 mg. daily tamoxifen by one of my MO's for some slight breast swelling I noticed four months into my ADT. It halted any further progression but it still has not resolved completely. I see two MO's, one at City of Hope and other at John Wayne Cancer Center. One said it would never go away once it has developed and the other said might go away after a few more months. Go figure.

It means that your ADT has done an excellent job. When PSA becomes undetectable with ADT, that adds to the positive prognosis. As it wears off, your PSA may rise a bit as cancer cells continue to die from the radiation.

Ak123,

20 mg Tamoxifen is given to reverse breast enlargement from the Casodex. It acts as an estrogen antagonist in breast tissue. It's not chemo.

Howard, I doubt mine will go down now. I finished SRT at end of March last year. I am scheduled to see RO at end of this month and MO at beginning of April and scared to death from what they are going to tell me

Your PSA is still microscopic, the same as mine. We both have a long way to go before reaching the metastatic level, perhaps years. Just monitor it and when appropriate move to the next treatment.

Larry, I was not offered ADT unfortunately. I feel guilty about not doing my homework.
Howard, you are in better situation becuse you just finished and need to wait a few months before you declare SRT as a failure I think. what bothers me now is that I am not very educated about this step in my prognosis although guys here offered their opnions especially Tall Allen and cashless in terms of diet and exercise. The delima for me( may be you too) is when to start ADT ? and if you do, should you combine it with other drugs and may be even chemo which the name of chemo scares the beck out of me. It’s a TOTALLY different ball game now. So to say the least, I am scared.

Ak - If you haven't you need to get a good no great RO and his team and sit down and decide your course of action. I'm sure you have read the reports about the advantages of starting ADT early. JMHO

It doesn’t prolong survival but it has better cancer control as I can understand it and more toxicity

Your PSA is about the same as mine, .19, still microscopic. Tall Allen said the radiation continues to kill cancer cells for months.
