I know the answer to this question should be obvious, as in duh, but I have to ask it.

I see all the big hitters in PCa treatment are member institutions of NCCN. These include MDA, Cleveland Clinic, JH, MSK, Mayo, ...etc.

But does being a member institution mean the care and treatment is better than non-members?

I ask because I see two hospitals both within 250 miles of me that are on the list. One is only 150 miles. Those are reasonable distances to drive.

Buffet Cancer Center in Omaha and Barnes Jewish in St Louis.

alephnull, I don't know if the care, per se, is better--but the NCCN members all agree to follow the highest research based standards for both training and treatment. Plus, it's reasonably certain that all the major players at those institutions at least know of each other.

I was treated at Barnes-Jewish. When I moved to the Philadelphia area, and got to know a urologist here for follow up, one of his first comments was..."I see you had RALP at BJC with Dr. F. I've never met him, but he does have a great reputation, even out here on the east coast......"

IMO, you'd do well at either Buffet or BJC.

It means that they are among the top cancer centers, but not all the top cancer centers are NCCN members. In the LA area, for example, UCLA, USC, and Cedars-Sinai are not members. Among the top 25 cancer/urology centers in the US News & World Report that are not NCCN members include UoP, Thomas Jefferson U, Weill Cornell/NY/Columbia Presbyterian, U of Pittsburgh, NYU Langone, UT Southwestern, Beaumont Hospital, UCDavis, UNC & U of Kansas

And then there are also doctors like Luke Nordquist, M.D., F.A.C.P. who are also well regarded by many of their regional patients (in his case in west Omaha, Nebraska at the Urology Cancer Center).

Honestly I'm try to gauge the caliber.

Because, when I found out that a cancer center being affiliated with one of the big guns really didn't mean that much.

And I really would like to just find a really high quality center near me.

Adhering to a high agreed upon standard is a great start.

alephnull, it looks like you are seeking the list of NCI-designated cancer centers which Sr Sailor provided the link to.

In the NCI network, there are 49 Comprehensive Cancer Centers, 13 Cancer Centers, and 7 Basic Laboratory Cancer Centers. An NCI-designated Cancer Center means that a Center has met NCI standards for cancer prevention, clinical services, or research. A Comprehensive Cancer Center meets NCI standards in all three categories.

The NCCN is an alliance of a subset of the NCI-Comprehensive Cancer Centers (CCC) which develops and shares resources mostly related to clinical trials. All 27 NCCN cancer centers are NCI-CCCs.
