I had the opposite problem - large tori (bone) grew on the outside of my gum area all around the radius of the bone/gum area (between the base of the teeth and top of the gum.) It got so bad I had surgery three months ago to remove them. But these have been slowly growing for the past 25 years.

Also as a teenager in the 1960s I had radiation to my face area as an acne "treatment" - radiation was the latest medical fad back then.

ADT can cause bone loss...I've been taking OTC calcium pills (600mg + D3) X 3 once a day since I started on ADT several years ago...I've had no bone or jaw problems.. I'm about to start chemo, and my MO has talked about starting Denosumab and Zometa to help protect my bones and prevent SRE's. These drugs are famous for causing jaw rot and tooth loss so using them is a double edged sword....

My feelings....My quality of life is fine at the moment, even as my cancer advances rapidly...Why destroy that QOL by taking drugs that have the potential for making things worse, not better..??

If you floss everyday (using those little plastic floss holders) and maybe use a water-pick type appliance to keep your teeth really clean, you can save yourself a lot of trouble...

Yeah, I've been thinking about cutting out the lettuce and veggies...

and the vit-d tablets are likely causing me all kinds of trouble.

what's frustrating is that it's only two places in my mouth and everything else is fine. When I was what more cleaning can I do to fix it the answer is always, "you're doing all you can." I've resisted going to the periodontist because I just don't want another medical professional in my life, but the last measurement and x-ray push me over the edge.

Currently I'm being threatened with deep cleaning, root plaining, bone grafts, and other non-fun surgical interventions. I'm hoping the answer is, "use this mouth wash, this kind of floss and you'll be fine."

I'm still blaming the radiation...

I had to have the bone ground around all my teeth and my gums trimmed. my doctor did half my mouth at a time. I believe with deal it was like $1500 a quadrant and that was 15 years ago at least. it was very painful and my teeth were super sensitive for months. a couple of years later I had to have three quadrants redone. it was a little less painful the second time but so far we are talking 7 x $1500. I also have a six-tooth and an 8-tooth bridge ... at least another $20k. maybe 20-30% was picked up by insurance.

I do whatever my dentists recommend now. too much time, money and torture into my mouth to do otherwise. also having localized deep pockets is typical. if you can get away with deep cleaning consider yourself very fortunate. I had to have necrotic bone removed and my gums trimmed.

try not to dwell on the cause just focus on the solution if you can.

As mentioned previously, I had been on HT for eight months when crowns started breaking off. From last August thru last month I was at the perio's office every Wednesday, and my general dentist interspersed in there as well, plus quarterly cleaning & checkups... usually leading to new root rot being discovered. I use Rx toothpaste and mouthwash as I have chronic dry mouth from sialoadenectomy around 40 years ago.

Total out of pocket for the past eight months on top of insurance was $15,000... so far. Still have one provisional crown in place waiting for gum to grow over. I do not have gum disease but the gum grafts were due to bone loss. Bone planing in three quadrants. Have had bridges replaced by implants.

Again, it's not like I don't take care of my teeth, but my first military location post-AIT was not conducive to good oral hygiene. Subsequent to ETS had many crowns and now 45 years later most have required replacement. Still hoping to get all eight incisors recapped and believe this will last me for the rest of my life.

Not planning on ever having dentures.

I don't believe I've ever said that, or maybe we're confusing two different types of implants. My dentist did require a note from my RO before treating me, but there was no mention of the AUS. I needed to get the AUS in order to proceed with ART as I had been fully incontinent since RRP and RT required a full bladder daily. The implants I mentioned above are dental implants that replaced a bridge and missing teeth. Sorry for any confusion. It is a rather complicated case.

Or are you saying that "you've heard that you must inform your dentist of any implants before deep cleaning"? In that case I think it's that dental work can introduce bacteria into your system that can cause foreign matter in your body to harbor infection. Such was the case when I had steel plates in my leg. I suppose the same goes for artificial joints or maybe a heart valve. I never considered that the AUS might also be affected ad well. I suppose I should ask my dentist and my uro about that.

Sorry rob, I was talking about a penile implant. Penile implant site they were talking about notifying dentist before any deep cleaning. Infection, I guess.
