I lived in London for 10 years but i have just moved back home, to Portugal.

I am aware of some of the theoretical risks associated with doing a biopsy, but from your experience how harmful and risky do you think it is?

Biopsy experience varies incredibly. Some guys whiz through with no problems, while others say it hurts like the devil. A small percentage of guys get infections, which have the potential to be serious. All guys end up with blood in their urine and semen afterwards.

Biopsies are annoying, uncomfortable, and undignified. There is a risk of infection and bleeding. Most tolerate it well, but there are risks. It's not something you want to do unless there is a need.

Most would to do more blood work before doing it (PHI as TA mentioned or at least a freePSA).

But it is your body and your choice.

I assume the blood in urine and semen is temporary, right?

I did the free psa test and it came back at 13%

It's temporary. Urine clears in days/weeks but semen can persist a little longer. Also it's likely to elevate your PSA for awhile (weeks/months) and likely aggravate your prostatitis. Infection would be a bigger concern.

The results could be anything from nothing to PC - the results aren't always useful.

It's a choice you have to make. We can't make it for you.

Thanks. Sure, I know it's a decision that only i can make, but it's useful to know what you think. You've been through this and have valuable experience which feels more personal than the cold dettached mind of a doctor.
