Prostate cancer - Gleason score 9(4+5), bone metastasis

Usually when someone asks a question and uses the words "osteoblastic" or "orchiectomy" there's not much I can tell them that they don't already know.

What you probably already know is that his disease is both serious and incurable at this point but that it can often be successfully managed with good quality of life for quite a while. The palliative radiation should give him quite a bit of relief from any pain he might be having and the orchiectomy should stop the progression of the disease for a while, maybe as much as a couple of years, although it's hard to say. Once the disease starts progressing again there are a number of other treatments that buy yet more time.

Have his doctors talked about chemo? There is, I think, evidence that early chemo shows more benefit than waiting until later when the disease has advanced. I don't know when or if it's appropriate but it is something to ask his doctors about.

Sid, welcome to the forum, sorry about your dad. Like Saipan P, I don’t have in depth knowledge about Gleason 9, but I do know that while bone mets do complicate things a bit, it’s manageable for quite a long time.
I would add, as a way of encouragement, that whatever stats you might be reading, they are from studies so often involving men that were diagnosed years ago. And we’ve had so many advances in treating advanced PCa in recent years, that prognosis is often much better than many studies show. Something to keep in mind as you browse the Internet.

Hi Sid007 - your father is fortunate to have you on his side. We frequently have family members post here for husbands or fathers. There are some knowledgeable people here, so feel free to ask questions. We're here to help. Others have already provided some good information, so about all I can add is a welcome to our little corner of the universe.

I've added you to the "G9 Crew" thread, a gathering place for those of us facing this diagnosis. You might look through that thread to find others in a similar situation. There are many of there with a variety of G9 conditions, and most are still doing well. There are links next to each forum name so you can see their own threads for even more follow up. Typically, people in this situation are looking for whatever advanced treatments are available, and less interested in dealing with side effects, or at least more willing to tolerate them. This version of the disease demands just about everything we can throw at it!
