Had my open RP on Wednesday at noon. 3 hours. Done well and got to go home next day around 1pm.
Has gone much better than I anticipated. Getting better day by day. Awaiting biopsy and looking forward to getting this cath out! Thanks to everyone getting me prepared for this!

Congratulations, bw1963! I had an open prostatectomy and had a good recovery. All the best on your continuing PC journey. Take care and hang in there.

Glad to hear that and along with the rest, hope the recovery goes well for you. I am curious as to why the open procedure was elected over robotic.

It does feel good to finally get it done and over. The catheter was the worst part for me. You’d think you might get used to having a thick piece of rubber through your junk, but it never happened for me.🙂 It will be out before you know it!

bw glad you got that behind you. While the catheter is not bothersome to most, i agree with the others, the day you get it out, is a day you will never forget. You'll be a different person.

Good luck on the pathology. Here's hoping for all good news from here on in

Hello new Brother Bill, from another Bill! Getting the catheter out will be glorious in many ways. Hopefully you will be in the "pretty continent pretty quick" group, as plenty of guys are( I wasn't, took me a while). But as if a catheter isn't bad enough, mine started leaking around the balloon! I removed my own catheter and drain at home. Actually, my wife removed the drain, it took a lot of tugging, kind of stuck after being in well over a week close to 2, but did not really hurt despite that. For some reason, though she deflated the balloon, she wanted me to pull my own cath, so I did. Again, that didn't really hurt.

Walking should be very helpful for your over all healing. Good healing to you!

Keep doing well. Remember, no one has ever cancelled an appointment to have their cath removed.

Thanks everyone! Getting better day by day.

@Pontiacwild - Chose open because I know 2 people who had the procedure with him with great results.
When I met him he went over both procedures in detail. He only does open, said he would refer me to someone if I wanted robotic. He said he averages about 120 a year and has done well over 2K of them.
I was in the OR just before noon and was released by noon the next day.
In my humble thinking one big hole was better than 5 small ones and also a robot can't feel like an experienced hands can when checking lymph nodes that might be suspect. Just my opinion.
Are you going for treatment or already had it?

Thanks for your answer. I am now in the decision making side of things and feel very similar to what you had decided. I am not the least bit afraid of the surgery itself and just don't have the faith in radiation I should. Surgeon at Barnes in St. Louis said he could go in with the camera and decide if robotic or what you had would be best for my particular situation, although he was suggesting seed therapy due to a recent colon surgery.
It pleases me to no end that your (open) surgery was so successful. That's 'pleasing' for the both of us. I know from personal experience how GREAT it is to get that catheter out.
