This is an interesting article. It argues that studies on PC that are 20+ years old might not be relevant to today's treatment as both diagnostics and treatment methods have improved so much that the older data is no longer relevant in today's treatment world:

Another take away from these is that treatment is in fact improving and much better than in the past.

Hello ~

The fact that researchers are still working away in laboratories across the world, and constantly working on new clinical trials tells me that there IS HOPE ... new medications, new treatments, new advances.

When I was growing up, my grandfather was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

There was nothing offered to him ... no radiation, no chemotherapy, no PROVENGE, no XTANDI, no ZYTIGA ... these were not options at that time ... he was diagnosed in the fall, we had one last Christmas together with him, and he was gone before the winter snows melted away.

I remember his determination and strength ... but I realize now, in retrospect, that his doctors must not have had anything to offer him, in terms of treatments or medications.

That was over 40 years ago ... and so I have witnessed, first-hand, the advancements that have been made since my grandfather's diagnosis.

I hold onto hope that the ongoing clinical trials will result in new advancements in the very NEAR future, for all of our brothers in need.

A couple of deflating thoughts:

1. this is only about RP patients, not radiation/drug treated patients
2. they note that it's hard to compare the historical data because of the shifts in diagnostic criteria

That being said...it appears that yes, treatments are better today than in the past, and that earlier diagnosis leads to lower mortality...compared to years ago (pre PSA, I would assume)

Conclusions? Draw whichever ones fit your notion of what "good" is. (or bad).

When you are using studies to predict 5,10,15 year outcomes by the time the data is in and processed it is already outdated. Outdated but not useless just need to be carefully evaluated with the recognition that things have changed. Also can tell you what not to do and what has not worked.

I have been recently diagnosed and have decided to go on AS. Not only do I put off SE but better options may be available later on. On top of that I will know more about my situation

Just one inexperienced guy opinion.

Able to go on AS? Boy do I envy you!. You can bet your bottom $ that had I been even close to qualifying for AS, I would have done so. Although, I am making that claim based on what I know now, so who can say if I would have really chosen that back the. But I think I would have. Good for you!
