Bit of inattention? Vision problem (depth perception)? who knows.

In 2005 I learned the hard way to ALWAYS LOOK DOWN WHEN WALKING. Just one step and I ended up in a hospital bed for three months... three surgeries, wheelchair and walker, crutches for nine months and a cane for another year. I had intended to finally get the TKR when we moved to Florida, but instead I got cancer, then my wife, and then... well, you know the story.

It only takes a moment of inattention to change your life. Now I always walk very carefully.

explains why that's your bum shoulder. this morning I drove to Cupertino for a service call after getting home from Yosemite last night. try explaining to a customer that you're there for a service call but you forgot to put tools in your car ;^).

Those things are a menace to society. At my mother's condominium, they are in front of every parking place, and are of course white concrete blocks blending in with the white concrete driveways they are built on, so not easily seen, and just waiting for people to trip over.

Happened to me about a year ago. As i was leaving mom's condo after a visit, having closed the door behind me and walking forward with my attention on some papers in hand instead of looking ahead of me, and, yep, right toe hit that thing, and I went flying.

Of course in a situation like that you have maybe a tenth of a second to react, and, fortunately, I instinctively stuck out my left forearm and landed on that. Being in Florida, I was of course wearing a short-sleeved shirt at the time, so it was my bare forearm that hit the concrete driveway and scrapped along for a few inches.

Result was a really nasty, bloody scrape that was very painful and developed a scab that took forever to heal. More than a little upset, a day or so later I called the management and gave them a rather large piece of my mind about this. ("What if my 96-year-old mother had tripped on that thing? Are you aware of your liability issues in this?") The answer I got was something about the accursed concrete parking blocks had to be there due to zoning regulations or something.

Anyway, the point of this post is to suggest that if you have ever had a run-in (literally) with one of those evil parking blocks, I submit it wasn't your fault at all, not some kind of mental lapse on your part.

More a matter of very poor architectural design.

Those parking stops are indeed an unnecessary hazard. I witnessed a woman trip over one where I live. I called an ambulance for her, and then I had to convince a cop that I didn’t push her down. I found out later she had some broken bones. I flew over the handlebars of my mountain bike when I hit one, but that probably was my fault.

I'll tell this little story about my father. when he was about 70 he had three falls over about a month. The last on was bad enough that his apartment manager called an ambulance and he ended in the ER. Luckily, nothing broken, but did have a small cut. He was sore for a couple of weeks.

The ER doc was concerned about how much he'd been falling (dad had some strokes so there was a concern about that). The doc asked when was the last time dad had his glasses checked.

So dad went to the eye doc who updated the prescription and didn't have another fall for years. My theory was that the distance part of his glasses wasn't right and was messing with his depth perception causing him to not see right when going up steps. I also think his stokes had been affecting his vision.

eventually dad started using a walking stick - almost like a blind person's cane - to give him confidence he knew where the top of a step was.

deliberate...as you age all movements MUST be deliberated...when movements are dicey...tighten your core...use deliberate movements with a tightened core ...think kegal...drugs may have an effect...non e the less...this advice should help...

Unfortunately a fall exactly as you described changed my life forever.
I fell head first on concrete.
I messed up my spine big time.
I am now confined to a wheelchair.
I have severe muscle spasms.
I used to be physically fit, doing regular gym workouts.
That's all gone, unfortunately.
