Really interesting article linked below about
some professional athletes who either played their games while having cancer, or who left their sport, dealt with the cancer, got it controlled, and then returned to the game.
From the article:
"When it comes to cancer, it doesn't matter who it is, everyone has to fight the same brutal battle, and while the stories of the average person defeating the wretched disease are just as inspiring, the battles won by professional athletes often lead to raised awareness and sources of inspiration for those also battling for their lives."Probably the most famous instance of a professional athlete dealing with a serious illness is that of baseball player Lou Gehrig, whose illness, as we all know, came to bear his name: Lou Gehrig's Disease.
But his illness was not specifically cancer, while the athletes mentioned in the article below did deal with a form of cancer.
And let us not forget those brave college athletes we have occasionally heard about
, who have also made the news with their stories of dealing with cancer, and then returning to the collegiate playing field.
No mention of athletes with PCa in the article, which makes sense, since most athletes will be much too young for it, but in something like pro golf, it likely has occurred among some players. (Arnold Palmer comes to mind).
It's also interesting to note that a good number of the athletes mentioned in the article had testicular cancer. Maybe it's just coincidental, but is it possible that athletes are especially prone to that form of cancer?
Finally, an example cited in the article of one athlete's true grit in dealing with his cancer issue:
"Lemieux announced his cancer diagnosis midway through the 1992 season, but was back the same year (somehow playing on the same day as his last chemo session)."Hats off to those athletes who emerge victorious over their ultimate opponent.
