Prostate Cancer News reported today that some PC patients can safely receive short but intense course of SBRT radiation. Specifically, the report states that the number of treatments can be reduced from 45 to 4 or 5. I know that Cyberknife is a form of SBRT and that the number of treatments is about 5. Is the SBRT treatment referred in the article the same as Cyberknife? If it is, I don't understand what this new study is reporting. Thanks.

Yes. CyberKnife is a brand name of the radiation using a particular machine. SBRT is basically external beam IMRT radiation delivered in fewer but more powerful fractions. CyberKnife does the exact same thing, just using a linear accelerator specifically designed and branded with the label.

This new study is reporting nothing new.
And, as JNF noted, CyberKnife is the best known system to deliver SBRT. But there are other systems as of today.

As mentioned above. Cyberknife is not the TX but the delivery device. The TX is SBRT. A highly accurate form of EBRT thus allowing higher dosage with fewer treatment sessions.

Effective? Yes.
Shorter? Yes
New? No.

Dr. Katz has published his 10-year statistics. SBRT has been around quite a while, and more than a few patients here have used it.

The posting may be new, but the treatment really isn't.

Dr. Meier of Swedish in Seattle is 12 years into this TX.
