There's another universe somewhere where that happened. I married one of those others, and was a Classics professor instead of a librarian. Different kids, lived in a different city, and all the rest.
We can never know what that other universe, and maybe it's even going on right now with another me, is like.
But it's very intriguing to imagine.

The funniest story I've read about
counterfactuals and the limits of what you can plausibly hold constant and what you can change when hypothesizing was written by Douglas Hofstadter (author of
Gödel, Escher, Bach). He was discussing "what if" stories with a friend, who said "Yeah, my dad was almost president of the United States." Hofstadter said "What do you you mean? Your dad wasn't even in politics." And the friend said "True, but he
was captain of PT-108."
