Read in the NYT that Bob Watson has died at 74 from kidney failure. It stated that he had surgery for prostate cancer in 1994. After college I moved to Houston in 1971. In the summer when it was hot and humid I would go to Astros games at the Astrodome. There was a huge Gulf Oil sign out in the outfield with a large orange light in the middle, If the light was lit up and an astro player hit a home run, the crowd would get free beer through the 7th inning. We called them "Foamers". Bob Watson was on the team. And along with Jimmy Wynn, the Toy Cannon, Bob were our best "Foamer" hitters. There was nothing better than running toward the concession stands at the crack of the bat.

Sadly, Jimmy Wynn recently passed away. Later today I'll drink a beer to my two favorite "Foamer" hitters.

He was a class act. Clutch hitter: .371 in 17 postseason games. I remember seeing him with the Yankees against the A's when I was living in Oakland in the '80s. RIP indeed.

On his advocacy for prostate cancer awareness, from Wikipedia: "Watson wrote about his experience with prostate cancer in his 1997 book, Survive To Win, and spoke regularly at cancer awareness conferences and with players and staff in Major League Baseball. Watson's advocacy has been credited with detecting and treating many MLB personnel, including Joe Torre."
