The pandemic just keeps causing more and more trouble.
The article linked below reports that the American Cancer Society will be cutting 1,000 positions nationwide due to " ... major financial hardship during the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic."
From the article:
"The pandemic has severely reduced our fundraising revenue and forced us to take significant cost-saving measures. ACS is reducing its overall budget by approximately 30 percent."A major problem, it seems, is that due to the pandemic the ACS will not be running as usual its annual Relay For Life events, the source of about
a "quarter of its total fundraising" the article says, contributing to a budget shortfall this year of " ... a minimum $200 million."
Also
"If current revenue trends continue, we could be forced to cut our research work by 50%."which is most serious, since
" ... the American Cancer Society is one of the largest funders of cancer research in the world." Another example of what one might call the Law of Unexpected Consequences, that when an ominous event of large proportions occurs, it can have a drastic and unforeseen negative impact in other areas, causing even more trouble.
But it also makes me wonder, half-seriously, if the time is soon coming when we will be seeing the formation and establishment of the American Coronavirus Association, akin to the American Cancer Society in its mission and work, and possibly with a need for it to be around for years to come, unfortunately.
