Famed sportscaster speaks out about being diagnosed with prostate cancer

Sportscaster Brian Custer was at the pinnacle of his career covering college football and basketball for Fox Sports when a free prostate cancer screening at work changed everything. “The doctor said, ‘Listen, there’s no easy way to tell you this, Brian, but you’ve got cancer and it’s aggressive,’” he recounts in a video with Yahoo Life. Just 40 years old at the time, Custer was told if he didn’t get surgery immediately, he may be dead within two years.

I googled Brian Custer and came up with this from the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Interesting that his uro told him that if he didn't have surgery in two years that he'd be dead.

The intervention was in 2013, he is still getting PSA tested every 3 months. That infers there is a reason for the testing, like a rising PSA, for example.

A G7 can well progress to much worse, despite major interventions. Part of the nature of the beast is the uncertainty.

Details always seem to be absent in PCa stories about well-known men, with the exception being perhaps the choice ofsurgery or radiation. So the message seems to be just to have PSA screening. We can't expect details like "I'm doing so-so in the erection department" or "still leaking a bit when I laugh."

Yep, and reports of these stories also follow a predictable pattern on here. There will be variously energetic rants about whether he was overtreated, or whether his rhetoric is overblown. In general, critiquing what he did based on a very general news story that has nearly zero details.

I would suggest a better response would be--gee, that sucks, as young as he is. He's one of us now. Let's hope he uses his situation to help get the word out. Stuff like that, instead of piling on a guy who isn't here--and if he knew what was being said, would never be willing to show up.
