Signs a Biden administration will look favorably on cancer research and funding (Article)

The article below gives reasons why the soon-to-be Biden administration may well look favorably on the value of cancer research, and, presumably, support funding for it at a very effective level.

It claims that one may be

" ... hopeful that Biden and Harris might prioritize funding for and support for cancer research if elected in November, as they both have strong ties to the disease."

Of particular interest:

"One of Gopalan’s (her mother's) most important research contributions was published in 1967 and involved figuring out how hormone receptors worked in relation to breast development and breast cancer."

"Joe Biden’s cancer advocacy is well documented after his eldest son Beau passed away from an aggressive brain tumor called glioblastoma multiforme aged 46 in 2015. "

"After Beau’s death and after Biden left office, he set up the Biden Cancer Initiative with his wife, Dr Jill Biden. The initiative was a non-profit venture designed to continue the work of the Obama administration’s Cancer Moonshot, which Biden led while he was still in office."

"Biden remains dedicated to cancer research and improving access to care for people with cancer."

"Although personal experiences or ties to particular causes are no guarantees of translation into beneficial policy, if Biden and Harris win November’s election, cancer researchers and people with cancer have every reason to believe that the cause will be high up on the agenda for the new U.S. President and Vice President."

"He absolutely understands how critical science is to the process and how critical funding is for science to be able to conduct the work required, he gets that."

Of course as soon as Biden takes office, there will be a vast number of pulls on him to get funding for all sorts of things, and there is no guarantee that the past experiences of either of them will result in appreciable funding for cancer research.

But one would think that with the backgrounds they do both have in dealing with the disease, that would be a favorable sign that they will certainly be sympathetic toward cancer research, including the possibility of a good level of funding for it.

It will indeed be interesting to see how this develops.

Not that it bothers me, but the whole thread is political. I guess it depends on how you define it. I would love it if we could talk a little politics, but we can't even talk about Vitamin D without it going off the rails. 😉

Anecdotal information but my son’s lab at Cornell received significant funding increases during the Trump years compared to the Obama years. Most of their research is cancer based. His specific research now is a childhood liver cancer. They also just got a significant NIH grant for Covid research on ACE2 receptors in the intestinal track and the effect Covid is having.

In the research spending there were no actual dollar decreases just less of an increase than requested. Remember when congress wants a 10% increase and any president holds it to a 5% increase it is reported as a 50% cut.

We all want to see more money for cancer research and vascular disease and obesity and everything. But this funding is rarely a function of the presidency as it really comes up through the government bureaucrats, lobbyists and special interest groups influencing at the congressional level. When was the last time any presidential budget was accepted? I remember they usually go down in flames in the congress.

I do hope for more research spending as that is far better use of our dollars than so many other things.

I, too would like to see more of a universal health insurance situation here. I lived and worked a quarter of my adult years in countries with universal health insurance and largely government run healthcare and my experience there was that they were universally poor for the elderly. Clearly we can’t have that in the USA. A lot of improvement is needed and the challenge is to improve without setting anyone or group backwards.
