Question about Mp-MRI scans

I have a friend who has a rising PSA which is now at 7.9 from 7.0. The DRE was negative. I am also aware of the new Mp-MRI scans that can be used as a substitute for a needle biopsy.

Will the needle biopsy eventually be required if he demonstrates a high enough risk? Please help me out with the opportunity for helping him use this scan as a potential substitute for the standard needle biopsy.

The MP-MRI scans are better but they will not save one from the biopsy unless they show nothing and someone wants to leave it at that and not pursue the matter further. I would probably not do that with an increasing PSA at the 7 magnitude. The cellular structure has to be microscopically analyzed to determine if the “mass” is benign or cancerous and then what grade it is. Some insurance companies will not pay for the MRI without a positive biopsy which makes little sense but it happens. I am pretty sure that most insurance companies would not pay for treatment without the results of a positive biopsy either. Maybe some day….
