Dear David,
You are so brave and just handle each issue as it happens. I admire you for your courage and I am very happy that you have a close support group of faimily and friends.
The Bed and Breakfast sounds like an awesome idea and fun besides. I know you carry Jesse in your heart no matter what your doing.............and know that we will be praying as hard as we can!
Please take care of you too, and as for the blood banks these days they are pretty safe so I would not let that bother you.
I am here for you, take my hand..............

thanks for your support for. I thought I would take a minute and update you on my grandson's health.

The hospital did a contrast CAT scan because of various fears.
The test showed that all the areas of were getting blood. There also were not any areas of blood clots.
They discharged Jesse home last night. He has to return in 2 weeks but now is in his home with mommy and daddy--grandpa and grandma live next door--oh shucks.

The 23rd is coming and then it will be the 24th and you will be past surgery.........you will be a post-op instead of a pre-op.........I am here for you. Take my hand.
My prayers continue for all of you in your family. What a great family you have.

Whenever the news about a little child is good it sets things right in this world, doesn't it? It's good the hospital was so through.

Though the forum here is comprised of "active-cyber-bystanders" ( there is such a thing, right??? tongue ) it's good to know that no matter where we are or what situation we're in, the good thoughts, prayers and well wishes of others who care can reach us.

We'll be here when you return, anxiously waitng for your post op report, oldfordlover.

Great news David,

And good news is always welcome on this forum. We are here hoping and praying for your grandson and for your good result from the surgery. I always feel a lot less anxious if it is me going through a trial than one of my loved ones.

Just thought I would let you know.

Jesse has been home a few days and with each passing day is more like other babies his age.--It is very exciting. Since I have been there since day one and since I always sing to my babies, Jesse now immediately goes to sleep when I hold him and sing to him.
It will be a few years to know what the long term effects but now all things look good.

We have now finished 3 dress rehearsals 3 dance recital shows with 325 dancers and 1600 in attendance (last show last Saturday). Sunday our middle son graduated from High School and we had a lovely party for him.

Now we are resting for tomorrow surgery. Thanks for all of your prayers and your support. It is nice to converse with people who understand.

It is also nice to talk to people about PC and not have to take care of them.

Have you noticed that when you tell anyone about the cancer you end up taking care of them because they are so upset.. That is really weird.

Dear David

Why in life some have to bear burdens far bigger than others we will never know.  You and your family have had more than your share.  Unfortunately, life is not always fair and we have to face what seems to be unsurmountable challenges in life at times.  I hope and pray that your beloved grandson will continue to rally and be spared any permanent damage.  Good luck on your surgery tomorrow.  Wishing you and all of your family members many blessings ahead.

we were set to go home today--even have the car packed but Children's decided that they need a contrast CT and possible an MRA. They think they have found a blood clot in addition to the bleeding. This will impact how much damage has been done to his brain.
Please continue prayers.

It is weird I haven't had any time to worry about my upcoming surgery as this is much more in the forefront.
I had to cancel my second blood donation since I am not at home, but my doctor thought one unit in reserve was probably enough.
I will keep you updated.

My wife is getting ready for recital so she is not with us. Dress rehearsal start tomorrow. We gave up on a yard lunch for our sons graduation and moved it to a friends bed and breakfast. It is a much nicer place and is a lot less work for us. That is this Sunday.

Hi David, I have been reading all your posts and I am so saddened by the challenges that you are facing. I am also in the clergy (I am the International Coordinator for Global Recordings Network - used to be called Gospel Recordings out of LA) Is it easy to deal with out own problems but it is so hard when it is our kids or grandkids. We served in Africa for almost 20 years and missed our first two grandkids birth and early years but now being back in Canada we are enjoying our newest (18 months) grandchild - what a joy. How my wife and I feel your pain at this time.

But as the Lord says, in ALL things, REJOICE! When is your planned surgery? Mine went awesomely well and I am doing better that I hoped.

Praying for you and all the family David and when you get a chance, please write back.

As requested I will update you on our Grandson.
We have some everyday as we are keeping all of the childcare within the family. He is progressing very well. Eating all the time and his movements and behaviors are totally age appropriate. We are very hopeful of what we are seeing. He is almost 10 lbs now which is a long way from the 6-4 he weighed at birth in early May.

As to the physiological concerns. His most recent brain ultrasound revealed that the area that we thought was blood is in fact a infarction. This is a dead spot measuring a little over 2 inches by around 1 inch in the right hemisphere of his brain.

Obviously that is a little concerning but we remain optimistic. Since he was just born--no memories were lost. I believe that his brain is already learning new places to store stuff in his brain.

None of us use very much of our brain anyway (some less than others).

If there is noticeable damage it will be in the area of math--music--art and not movement and walking.

Since I feel like my PC surgery was a miracle, and our grandson is also a miracle, we are awaiting the third miracle in the healing of my wife

Please let me give you some advise that I dearly wish I had known before my daughter was 7.

Our oldest has a disorder related to her heart/lung disease called DiGeorges Syndrome. Her brain is damaged in the same exact area...and she excelled in music! Mind you, her disorder is a little different than an infarct however, the majority of damage is in the right hemisphere. Brain damage is brain damage.

Devanie was introduced to a lot of music and reading from the time she was born. I read to her from day one.
Same with music. We went to every concert and played every music game there was. We spent hours in the library every week enjoyng the written word. She loves music, especially vocal music. Dev's reading level is normal. Albeit her comprehension is not quite equal to her reading, she does get by pretty good there. (Devanie sang at Carnegie Hall with a college chior at 16 by the way!!)

What we didn't know and were not told UNTIL I ASKED, was we had to do the same with math. Her exposure was appropriate for her age, just not for her needs. Had I known, she might be able to count change for a dollar today. Dev's math is less than 1st grade level dispite having had her involved with some of the best specialists in the country for over 20 years. We had no idea that in order to reduce her disability in math we had to have exposed her to more than just counting and recognition from as early as the age your grandson is now. Even singing 2x2 is 4 and so on will help. Dev cannot do multiplication and she cannot divide not can she add double figures. She can add low numbers. Her daily life is dependent on a calculator and an ATM card. Money really doesn't mean anything to her except she understands it does get her what she wants. She knows what a 10 or a 20 is but she doesn't know what .72 cents is! Why? Because it's change and a 10 is a 10...simple recognition. Since ATM cards came out, Dev's forgotten how to use a checkbook. I've had to reteach her twice now! Learned the hard way to never let go of what she has learned...or else she forgets!

SOOO, my adivse? Start now, even if its just in song and pictures. There are some good early math games put to music out there and of course there's always childrens flash cards. Anything that stimulates that part of Jess's brain...just make a game of it! Any math ability Jess has is better than what he'll have if he isn't heavily exposed early on. The more exposure, the better his math skills will be. Good luck and happy counting:>)

In a former life, I worked for 3 years in special education while a psychology major at a major university.  (circa 1972-75).

Dave's grandson and Swim's daughter both remind me of several miracles I witnessed as suddenly, new synapses and brain circuitry surprised all of us -  and children that were once challenged in a certain area began to excel.

This comment is to encourage you - and to agree with Swim that
     as Sherlock Holmes always said to Dr. Watson, "The game is afoot."
My thoughts and dreams will be with both of your families about these children.

Swim - I appreciate your experience with your daughter...I think it's good advice for all of us with these wonderful children/grandchildren we're priviledged to spend time with.
