Hi Everyone!!

Hope you are all doing well. I had a visit with our onconlogist today who thinks I should see a radiation doctor ASAP, due to the positive margins and high Gleason. I also had an appointment with my surgeon/uroligist and told him that I was being sent to see a radiation Dr.

My surgeon said I should not have any radiation until I am completely healed and have regained continenance, The reason is if I do radiation too soon I will not regain continenance. I thought this was interesting as I had not seen this anywhere before. I agreed to meet with a radiation Dr. just to see what they have to say, but I don't think I will have any radiation actually done yet.

Again I truly hope you are all doing well, and once again I am so glad I found this site. It is very helpful especially when we are dealing with such a complicated situation.

Hi Rick: I think it is wise to wait until you heal internally as much as possible before having radiation. You're only about six weeks out of surgery. Listen to your docs and keep us posted.

Hi Rick,
I have heard this from my oncologists as well. My Radiaologist was clear. Continance and ED after chemo or radiation will usually only return to the state it was before the treatment. This has not been an issue for me as my continance has been fine, and the blue pill works. Rick, I am T3b and Gleason 4+3=7 and PSA was 19.8, four margins positive. I too have to do radiation and HT (HT started, radiation this Friday). Chemo is a probability but not until I have healed from the radiation. Again for the same reasons. You will have tougher decisions on whether to take the other therapies as well. But for now, stay positive and heal the surgery. Try to do the things necessary to have regained your other resources, if you get my drift. And if you're good on those things, then ask your radiologist if it's OK to procede. But you may be mired in a tough call if these things don't cooperate.  If you decide, or are forced to decide because of the concern over the Gleason score, you just may have to move ahead anyway.  You may wish toe start with HT then radiation.

I met with my radiation oncologist when I was a couple of weeks post operative.....he told me that I probably needed radiation for my pca but he couldn't even think about starting until usually 12 weeks post op and certainly no sooner than 8 weeks, and definitely not until I had regained my continance. He also referred me to a medical oncologist to see about other options that I could be doing in the interim period. I just met with this Medical oncologist, however he said that I didn't meet the protocol for his clinical trials due to me having a previous bladder cancer. He wanted me to get my first psa reading which will be the first week of June, then if it was okay to go ahead and proceed with the radiation when I was ready.....if the psa was above .04 to come back to him and he would start a treatment plan. This Doctor is a professor at one of the best University medical schools in the country and practices at one of the better large hospitals in the midwest. I don't feel like he would just blow me off because I didn't qualify for his clinical trial, so I trust his judgment in my case. Anyway, both doctors were concerned about bladder function if radiation was started too soon. Good luck in your journey. jwb

Thanks for your responses, you can bet I won't have any radiation until it is needed. Thanks again. Jtb I can't beleive how close our numbers are. I hope you post often as I will to watch how we progress.
