By mistake I place this message in another thread. I'm copying it here. Sorry for the mistake.I just joined the Forum. I'd like to know if someone is aware of the HIFu procedure. I was diagnose with prostate cancer about 2 month ago. My PSA suddenly was over 11; so my urology took 10 samples. In one of the 5 done on my left lobule cancer was found with a Gleason of 3+4. My urologist at K.P. wanted to perform a radical prostectomy but the oncologist recomended 8 weeks of radiation after 2 dosis of Lupron. Lately I became aware of a relatively new method used in Europe, Canada, Asia, and some south american countries. Of course it has yet been aproved by the FDA. According to the information I gathered, from the developers, it has many advantages. Doesn't need hospital admission, the procedure is done in 2 or 3 hs., PSA should be down to 0.4 or less, it destroy the whole prostate, there is no pain, it can be repeated and it can be done on patients where traditional methods failed. Of course this is what the providers of the HIFU machines state. I would like to know it there is someone that knows about it first hand. It a very expensive procedure and no insurance pays for it. I would appreciate any input. Thank you.

University of Indiana is in phase 3 trials ...check there too.

Hello, In your same boat just diagnosed with prostrate cancer went in for routine physical. I have looked and spoked to a doctor about HIFU the only draw back appears to be the amount of data for 5 and 10 year success. I am looking at Proton Radation at Loma Linda Hospital in Califorina. Most of the people on this forum appears to have chosen Divinci surgey. Lewis B ......... Age 50 PSA 1.1 Stage T2A 1 core Gleason 3 + 3 = 6 very lucky to catch this at an early stage. You might be interested in clicking on our moderators most helpful posting at the very top of the Prostate Cancer page called "Helpful Hints" . . . . if you scroll down she has many direct links to many of our members and their journey's and in just looking I saw two references to HIFU which you may find helpful. Hi davlac,

Like others have said, I'm sorry for the reason you needed to join and I'd like to personally welcome you to this forum.  Please take advantage of all the resources available here.

Based on what you have said on your diagnosis, you have a good number of treatment options available to you.   You may also wish to create a personal profile, a signature file, as you see other members have done.  This way, we can see a little of your history at a glance when responding to your posts in the future.  The signature is totally optional.

HIFU is a very interesting new treatment that is showing promise.  There are other less invasive treatments as well, that you may consider.  Bronco suggested the proton radiation which has a good track record and others here are choosing Brachytherapy instead of surgery.  You may view a brief summary of some of these treatments here http://www.prostate-cancer.com  Other treatments are discussed in the forum and are referenced in the resources links and helpful hints topic at the top of the site.  The main thing is that you feel comfortable with the treatment is the right one for you.  You have some time to decide.

Hello davlac,

It's true that this site is populated mostly by surgery guys (and gals, thank you ladies), there are several of us who have chosen other treatments.  Some have had radiation, or seeds, or proton beam.  A couple have had HIFU.  Check out Bluebird's hints and links.

My urologist seemed to think that HIFU was a promising new way of dealing with our disease and I seriously considered it, but was unwilling to leave the country.  Please note that there are two methods of administering HIFU.  I recommend that you NOT choose a third world country for treatment.  Google USHIFU for more info.  Good luck to you.
