Hi, I had a blood test for anti tissue transglutnase and was told that the normal range was 0-19 but my result was 226 so it was likely I have celiac disease but this couldn’t be confirmed until I have a biopsy so I’ve been referred to a gastroenterologist. How likely am I to have celiac just from the blood test?

The test is pretty accurate - sensitive and specific. I think it would mean your odds of having celiac are over 90%.

But the biopsy is the final determinant. You will need to continue to eat gluten until the biopsy, so that they don't get a false negative on your biopsies.

My readings for this test were very high as well. I waited one year to see a gastro doctor. She wants me to do a biopsy. I got really sick within 2 weeks of restarting the gluten and couldn't continue. I decided not to do the biopsy and just stay off the gluten.

We have our son the choice - you have the biopsy OR you promise to be gluten free forever.
He chose the latter.

He is 29 years old and is still gluten free.

Interestingly - when he was younger and undiagnosed - he had horrible constipation.
But that has resolved with gf diet.

Some people have diarrhea instead.
