Any idea what this endoscopy report means?

Just back from this procedure and they handed me a copy of the report but didn't tell me what it all means. I initially went in to see if i for sure have Celiac Disease but it seems like they may have found more than just that. I have never had symptoms of Celiac but my bloodwork showed that I had it. Please help with any information you may offer on what this means. It reads like this:

Procedure: EGD with biopsy for H. Pylori and EGD with biopsy
Indications: Dyspepsia

Findings: Inflammation was found in the body and the antrum of the stomach. A biopsy for H Pylori was taken. GE junction at 40 cm. Normal duodenal folds were noted. The duodenal bulb was normal in appearance, as was the postbulbar duodenum.

Endoscopic Impression:
1. Inflammation in the body and antrum of stomach.
2. GE junction 40 cm.
3. Normal duodenal folds.
4. Normal duodenum.
5. A hiatal hernia.
6. Small bowel biopsy to rule out sprue.

It means that there was visible inflammation in your stomach, and that biopsies were taken from the stomach and small intestine to look for h. pylori & Celiac, respectively. It does not tell you why there is inflammation (that's what the biopsies are supposed to help with, depending on how savvy the pathologist is who reads them).

Hiatal hernias are commonly seen on endoscopies, and may or may not be of significance in terms of your symptoms. I used to have one that caused a lot of problems, but most of the symptoms disappeared after I had my gallbladder removed and so I don't even know for certain whether the hiatal hernia or the gallstones were the actual cause of my symptoms. I will say that acupuncture usually helped a lot with any symptoms I thought was from the haital hernia, so that may be something to consider looking in to if you are having symptoms of indigestion or other stomach discomfort. Keep in mind, however, that acupuncture is not proven to actually heal inflammation, it is only for symptom management.

I hope this helps. Do keep in touch and let us know what the biopsy report says (should take a week or two to get results...but ask your doctor if he doesn't call you with the results). Take care,

If they took a sample from your intestines then you do not have it..

assuming that someone might not have it because they took a sample is not exactly correct, because they need to have pathology review it. They took a sample to see what could be causing the inflammation you have. Once you get the pathology report back it would reveal more info. Because all you know right now is that you have inflammation, and you have a hernia.

  I know that they can swab the inside your mouth for a culture.  But my doc said that was the way that they could really tell me if I had it so they took a bioposy of my intestines....so that is just what I was told...but who know...some docs these days are just not up to speed.

It says that you have gastritis (which can be caused by a bacteria- H. pylori. That's why they did a biopsy to see of it is caused by this bacteria. The results should only take a day or 2 to test for h. pylori. (h. pylori can be treated with antibiotics.

Honest woman,
No worries, it is just frustrating in dealing with doctors, and I think there is alot of misinformation, and less then proactive doctors out there. Just because something is not in the mouth does not mean it is not elsewhere in the GI tract. I have had a negative oral swab and positive biosy's so I am just speaking to my own experience.
