Hi, I usually stay in the Chronic Pain forum, but today, I have some questions about
trying to shop gluten free. My son and I are living with my mom, right now, since I started having some major health issues last year, and I do most of the cooking around here. I love trying out new recipes, and love cooking (wouldn't do it professionally) but my issue is, my mom just found out 3 months ago that she is very wheat Intolerant, finally some light at the end of her over year long battle to figure out what was going on. Since she's been off of all wheat products ever since, and has been doing great. As I'm sure most of you are aware, and I have quickly learned, if you want to avoid wheat, you just look for gluten free on the label, or sit there and read all the ingredients lol.
So my question, I live in kind of a hilbilly town in souther California, and some of the more specialized stores for groceries are well over an hour's drive from the house, there is only a 3 ft section of shelves at the grocery store that have the specialized items like rice flour, and gluten free snacks and bread (we've actually started making our own bread for her, just got a big bread maker in 5 weeks ago, it's great), they don't even stock Xanthum gum or potato starch or tapioca starch.
Do any of you have any specific websites that you recommend, or specific stores that I can take a look at, that have gluten free items at reasonable prices? My health isn't very good, so I really don't have the ability to drive 65 miles, and look through 100 diferent stores in a day. If any of you had any ideas that would help narrow my search, I would very much appreciate it.
