I had 1/2 my thyroid removed because of a large nodule. the doc was afraid it was cancerous even tho my FNB was inconclusive. It turned out to be benign. I also have a cyst on the other side which is stable for now.
I did fine from surgery but now 7 months later I have all these odd symptoms. So my blood work showed TSH 4.9 and Free T4 is 1.
I am supposedly in range but the diagnosis was low/normal. And since I have gained weight, feel tired, listless, lethargic, moody, chills, and a flu like feeling, feet hurt, joint pain just to name a few new problems, my doc said undoubtedly I am hypo even tho some docs would say wait and see. but since I am living on 1/2 of a thyroid gland with a csyt to boot, he did not think i was crazy!!
I am 59 and too old for a
wait and see attitude. 
I needed help and he gladly put me on Synthroid 75. I felt better by the 5th day and now it is the 11 th day and I still feel ok. I am hoping to feel quite well by 3 months when I go back. He said that "you wouldn't believe the variety of symptoms people with thyroid problems have." So you might seem ok on paper but you are an individual. All you can do is go by your symptoms.
I had symptoms also before my tumor was taken out. Many symptoms, including some of the ones that developed after surgery.
This is a complex problem and can be hard to treat sometimes.
It seems easier when 1/2 or the whole thyroid is gone. Then there is no question in the Endo's mind, that something has changed!
