Hello,

I have had hypothyroidism for many years.  Around 5 1/2 months ago I broke out in hives and have had them ever since.  My allergist told me it's "chronic autoimmune urticaria."  Has anyone else with hypothyroidism had chronic hives?  I know the two can be related to eachother and I'm just wondering who has had this experience, and if you did what did you do? confused

I am also hypothyroid and sufer from chronic autoimmune urticaria.  I dont have an answer for you just letting you know you are not alone.  I use coconut oil on my skin I also use jojoba oil basically I try not to have my skin too dry so I wont get an itch, once I get an itch my whole body itches.  Believe it or not I am now experiencing this on my lips!  My Doc recommended benadryl but I can't tolerate it gets me gittery.    So you are not alone.

I also get hives on my lips (angioedema) and my eyes also swell up at times too.  Hopefully we'll find some answers...but so far I've seen many different Dr.'s and nobody has had any answers for me.  If I couldn't take antihistamines I'd be so itchy I wouldn't be able to handle it. shakehead   If you find any answers please let me know.

I feel for all of you who have been diagnosed with autoimmune chronic uticaria.  I was diagnosed in Aug 2008 and after many prescriptions and missing many days of work, I resorted to accupuncture. My lips and face would swell and my entire body was covered in hives. I started accupunture in Feb and in April had no more hives. Now I am hive free and taking no meds. It may not be the answer for everyone but it was for me.  I also found a website that had a listing of histimine foods which I omitted from my diet during my illness. You may find this helpful too.

I was diagnosed with Urticaria 1 1/2 years ago. I was hospitalized 2x because it was so bad. I saw a great allergist who put me on Atarax and Allegra. I have been hive free, I take it now about every other night. I just had my yearly physical and my blood work came back that my thyroid levels were 10.05. I thought I was just going through mid life change and had the winter dull drums. But the more I read up on it the more I have a lot of the symptoms. He wants me to wait until May 1st for another blood work but I don't want to wait that long feeling like this. Any suggestions? Thanks

Are any of you taking any medication for your hypothyroidism and if so, what medication are you taking?

I also have hypothyroidism and am on 25 mgs of Synthroid a day.

Is hypothyrodism known for causing hives. Approx 20 years ago I was dx with hot and cold spots and one cyst on thyroid. Needle assp. done
fluid filled not cancer. Put on synthroid for appro. 2years didnt help with hair loss or fatigue at all. I quit taking it went in for check up about 6months later and thyroid levels were fine. 5 summers ago I became
very sick suddenly rash then hives everywhere top to bottom including face. Prednisone twice one week later they came back Allergist put me on Atarax and Clarinex took 5 months to completely get rid of hives.
Has come back twice since then. Checked for allergies, lymes, MS, lupus
all negative. Recently symtoms came back doctor has checked thyroid
is there a special test that is for sure

Have you had an ANA test with titers? It's an antibody test for autoimmune disease.

Unfortunately, those of us who have one autoimmune disease (such as Hashimoto's or Graves) have a greatly increased likelihood of developing others. (such as urticaria, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis.) Sometimes when I'm in remission I think my immune system is just thinking about where to attack next.

Immunosuppressants can help most autoimmune diseases, but you have to weigh the risks of the drugs against the risks and discomforts of the disease. I often say my life is an ongoing medical adventure.

i am havin hypothyroidism since 2010,from 4 months i am getting hives daily,,,,,,itz very irritating,,,,plz helpp .........................which medicine are you people are taking for hives ,,,,????? are you people taking dailyy??????????? please reply sooonnn ...i am in trouble.....my routine blood is also normal

o g, I have awful hives since my 7th mon of pregnancy in 2009. only Allegra helps me. but it prevents me from sleeping at night. it's been awful health for me for the past 4 yrs. I need to be seen by the endo , never went to one b4.

I am a 35 year old female and I have just had my thyroid tested and even though my TSH results were 1.4, I do believe after having hives for 1.5 years, super dry, brittle hair that just keeps breaking off (even after taking Biotin, Multivitamin, and doing Coconut Oil treatments with no improvement), severe fatigue, weight gain (eating healthy and exercising), joint pain, high blood pressure, and irregular periods, my Dr office is telling me it's in normal range!!
I take 150 mg of Zantac (histamine 2 blocker) and 2 Claritin Redi Tabs(histamine 1 blocker) daily, one or the other was not enough so I decided to try taking both, and my hives stay away, if I stop taking it and miss two days they always come back. I thought maybe the hives were work related (I worked at Fedex, breathed in all sorts of fumes, jet fuel, diesel, etc.) I quit my job in Oct. and my hives continued. All of these things are unexplained. I am sure i have a long road ahead of me, but I hope this is the answer I have been looking for!! Hope I have helped someone with their hives issue, they made me feel almost like I was losing my mind and I am glad I found relief!

I added 150 mg of zantac on Friday and it worked!!! They are just barely there..a spot or two here and there....here is my story..

i also have hives and hashimotos. hives started out of nowhere about 10 weeks ago. went to the allergist, they said no skin test until i was off meds. they gave me 10 days of prednisone and zyrtec twice a day...didnt help. i woke up with a headache like 8 weeks ago and took an ibuprofen, i vomited immediatley then ended up in the ER with swelling all over my face. allergist said maybe i am allergic to ibuprofen. finally did bloodwork three weeks and my thyroid antibodies were at 1044 and some other thyroid levels were high, not my t3 and t4 though they were normal. so the allergist said its the hives are bc of my thyroid, not an allergy. i went to the endo, started me on 88 mg of tirosint and got a shot of hyrocortisone.allergist told me to take two zyrtecs a day and hydroxyzine every 6 hours it did not work. the hives were completely out of control last week, i had to leave work they were so bad. i took it upon myelf to take two benedryl and i started to swell everywhere, lips, chin, eyes. i ended up in the ER. the allergist called me in a 6 day medrol pack, 2 zyrtec a day, hydroxyzine every 6 hrs and the tironsint. started the medrol on friday night, i woke up clear on sat, but saturday nigh my lip started to swell out of nowhere. woke up sunday morning with mild hives. they were gone mon, tues and wed(wed was the last day of medrol) I woke up on thursday with them and i have them right now. it seems like everything i do aggravates the hives. if i were tight jeans then all hell breaks loose. i read that selenium helps lower antibodies and that zantac will help wit hives. so far today i have taken 2 zyrtec, tirosint, 1 hydroxyzine, 200 mg selenium and i just bought zantacand took two....lets see what happens. im seriously starting to lose my mind..i am miserable.

I've had autoimmune urticaria for approximately 2.5 years. I am now experiencing all the symptoms of hypothyroidism without having abnormal thyroid blood levels. But the reason I'm writing on this is to let those of you with autoimmune urticaria know that you may have undiagnosed food allergies/sensitivities. I have severely limited my diet, including going gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, nut-free, avoiding nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers), avoiding beans/legumes, either all together or in varying combinations. I am still trying to figure out exactly what I'm allergic to but by avoiding a lot of these foods I'm not experiencing hives everyday, and will only get them occasionally. When I do get them, they can usually be controlled with Zyrtec. You may be interested in trying an allergy elimination diet, or there are blood tests your doctor can do for more immediate allergies. If you think you have more of a sensitivity problem to foods, there are labs your doctor can order kits from, including Cyrex, Alcat, Metametrix, and Immunolabs. The problem with these is they are expensive and they all test slightly differently so I'm not sure how accurate or comparable the results will be. I have had Cyrex testing done and am now trying to figure out which other lab to try. Good luck everyone.

Here is an update....I had more labs done and my TSH level is normal now however my TPO is still but about 500 points under what it was in January. They tested me for all kinds of things this time, they found that I was Vitamin D deficient. My doctor feels this could also be why I have these terrible hives. He gave me a high dose of vitamin d to take. He also started me on soemthing called Dapsone-this is for the hives. I took it for the first time yesterday, for the first time in a long time I woke up without ANY hives. I have also been gluten and grain free for two weeks. I am starting the GAPS diet soon to see what exactly my triggers are. Im hoping the vitamin D will help and the hives will just be go away but i doubt it. So in the meantime, GAPS diet it is.

I am new to the group. What is the GAPS Diet, and what do you mean going gluten-free and grain-free? How does that help autoimmune disease? Please advise.

There is a strong link with thyroid disorders and gluten intolerance.

Gluten is a protein in wheat, so going gluten-free involves avoiding all wheat products, including bread, pasta, cookies, cake, and oats (if they are processed around gluten). But there are many gluten-free products popping up in grocery stores these days that are made from rice, corn, tapioca, and other gluten-free flours. You can also buy these types of gluten-free flour at certain grocery stores (they all specify that they're gluten free on the package). Eliminating grains from your diet is a bit more extreme, but involves avoiding all the wheat products, rice, corn, oats, quinoa, couscous (basically everything you consider to be a starch).

The thinking behind going gluten-free or grain-free is that these products tend to need more processing and so would not have been naturally consumed by the ancient hunters and gatherers, so our bodies are not efficient at digesting them. As such, eating these grains causes inflammation in the body, causing your body to not work at its optimum level. Eating foods that cause inflammation can also cause leaky gut syndrome, which allows small particles of food to leave your intestine and enter your blood stream and could be causing hives. But removing grains from your diet for a while (the suggestion ranges from 2 months to 2 years) can help to correct the imbalance, fix the leaky gut, and hopefully reduce the hives.

Also, corn and wheat are commonly contaminated with mycotoxins (fungus)...another potential contributor to health problems.

I have chronic urticaria but i am unsure if i have hypo-hyperthyroidism...I have had hives for almost year now...i dont know what to do...

Hi,
Rashes can be a symptom of hypothyroidism, to be sure you need to be tested for thyroiditis, ask your doctor to test your TSH,FT4and FT3.
If your TSH is elevated, then you are hypo, and need to be on thyroid hormone replacement, in this case they test your thyroid antibodies, these are TPOab and TGab, if either is positive, then you have hashimoto's disease.

With hashi, you will need to adjust your dose several times till you reach the proper dose for you.
If the urticaria is related to your thyroid, then once your levels adjusted properly it will go away.

I have been battling terrible hives now for 8 months. I have been medicated for thyroid for years... I'm of the mind that my thyroid meds need to be adjusted, that the levels, although in normal range, are not "normal" for my body...

While I am beating my head against the wall trying to get a doctor to adjust my dose, I have done research and several things that have helped with the hives:

QUECERTIN... it's a bioflavinoid that is a histamine blocker... I have read a number of articles that suggest it is a better histamine blocker than OTC drugs like Zyrtec or Allegra... both of which I also take on a daily basis. Quecertin needs to be taken at a does of 1000mg 3x a day.

VITAMIN C in very high doses, i.e., 5000mg a day, is also known to help with hives.

The herbs HOLY BASIL and RHODIOLA are good adrenal support herbs... there is evidence to show that when one's hormones are out of whack, and thyroid is a hormone, these herbs help support your adrenal glands, bringing hormone imbalance under control. You can buy these as pills, tinctures and tea. I drink alot of holy basil tea and add in a tincture of rhodiola. I also take a supplement by Gaia called Adrenal Health (or Stress Response - they are the same thing).

These measures simply make life bearable... I remain on a mission to deal with the root of the cause, which I strongly believe is my thyroid meds being "off" - but as many of you know, if you are in a "normal" range, a doctor will not medicate you.

I just wanted to get this information out there that might help someone else. My fiancé suffered chronic hives for over a year. Went to many allergist and various others doctors. Was put on a cocktail of antihistamines and anti itch medicines. It wasn't until an accident happen where she didn't take her 1.37 synthyroid but in generic form that all the sudden her hives went away. I researched Armour thyroid made from dessicated pig thyroid gland. After print up various info about this and taking it to her doctor and almost threatening to prescribe it. She has been better than ever no hives not tired all the time. Much cheaper that any other thyroid drug which is probably why the didn't want to prescribe it. Just wanted to let others know
