By 11 an EST I will be on the OR table having my Thyroid removed. I have not slept much tonight and my nerves have been racked for days. I have Hashimotto's Thyroid and it has produced a nodule on my thyroid, causing it to be 4 times its normal size.
I have so many questions; will I ever get my meds regulated so that I feel normal, I am tired of the fatigue, the weight I can't lose and all the other other problems I have had with Hashimotto's thyroid.
Can someone out there that has gone thru this give me some words of encouragement and tell me what to expect. I am freaked about
so many things.
Thank you.
And wish me luck....

I didn't see this in time, but I'm almost 2 months post-op from having my thyroid removed. I had to have radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer ( I also had Hashimoto's, and I had a nodule.) I've started taking Synthroid now that the RAI is over, and I already feel a little better (it's been a week since I started the meds). They have to take it slow, but I'm confident I'm on the way to feeling much better.
Good luck and best wishes!

Hello, thank you for your responses. I am now 1 week and 1 day post op. This sure has knocked the crap out of me. I also have Crohn's, RA and fibromyalgia, along with other things like asthma anemia, the list goes on. I am pretty much a train wreck.
My surgeon has told me with all my other auto-immune disorders I will not bounce back as quickly as some one who does not have them and because surgery is a trauma to the body my auto immune system went on attack against me because of surgery, and it flared up my RA, fibro and Crohn's so I am battling with this now. I was told due to the Hashimotto's thyroid my thyroid was pretty much dead and the mass/nodule was hardened, my biopsy came back good, which I am fortunate, I had hypocalcemia post op and was put on supplements with my last lab two days ago says that my levels are up...yeah!!
Now if I could only get feeling normal, what ever normal is. I have not felt normal for a long time. I want to get this weight off and now know I still have a battle on by hands but also have heard that people can succesfully lose weight after their thyroid is removed. We could never get my thyroid levels up enough, I am 200 mcg of sythroid and still my levels were to low. I am hoping without the thyroid I get some normalcy with this now.
Can anyone share their experience with me please, how are you? What should I expect? The docs don't seem to tell me nothing....Thanks....

Anastasia,
I had my thyroid removed in January of 2011. It had cancer in several areas so, I too, had the radioactive Iodine treatment. I am now getting ready to schedule my 6month body scan and blood work to go back to endo and see how I am doing 6 months post op.
I am on the 200mcg dosage as well. I told her that I feel fatigued, a bit dizzy, spacey and experience vision issues. She told me it could be the highter dosage but wanted to treat aggressively because of the cancer. If my levels are all good with this next check up she may adjust down. ( I do suffer from low levels of b-12, iron, and vitamin D so that doesn't help those symptoms either.)
I have just in the past 2 months been diagnosed with RA after seeing the same doctor for 4 years with a fibro diagnosis. So, there are so many things going on at once that we are having a hard bit of time trying to get everything on the right and even keel.
I will keep you posted on the results from scan and blood work and with whatever the endo has to say on next visit (Sept. 12).
good luck with you, keep me posted
