Anybody else out there gone from being Hypo to Hyper? My labs and my symptoms now show I am hyper after being hypo for years. My TSH is .001 but my antibodies and other tests were high. Any input?

What is the dosage of your medicine?

If your antibodies are high, you might have Hashimoto's, and that causes hypo to hyper swings until it settles completely hypo before it completely shuts down the thyroid. At least, that's how my endo explained it to me.

Hi Joy, They have taken me off my synthroid completely. They kept cutting my dosage back little by little with no change in my labs. So i have been off totally for a month.

I am having the iodine uptake test next week. Hopefully get some results from that.

Beth, that is very interesting. I am going to talk to my endo about that. I just know I didn't like it when I had hypo but this hyper stuff is awful! The meds for my heart and the shakes are helping somewhat so I am thankful for that. But the way my heart beats I am afraid permanent damage is going to be done.

grandma, I assume you're on beta blockers. I don't think you have to worry about permanent damage. The big question is if you need to decide on a treatment for the hyperthyroidism if the doctor won't have you wait a bit. Should you have to do so, please take time to make a fully informed decision as to what treatment you opt for. Good luck!
(Oh, I should introduce myself. I found HealingWell to get some input for another family member and thought I'd swing by the thyroid board, having been hyper myself.)

Well the results are in....

Good news: the scan showed an enlarged thyroid but not nodules, lumps, bumps or any other issues.
Bad news: thyroid uptake showed definate hyperthyroidism.

So, I go to endo dr next week to discuss options.

I am on beta blockers that help somewhat. Can't live like this much longer. But I want to make an informed decision. Thankfully I have access to some doctors that I will be getting input from.

I would also like input from anyone here that had to choose treatment for hyperthyroidism.

At the time my hyperthyroidism was diagnosed I urgently needed surgery, so had to go with the supposedly quickest way.

I had radioactive iodine treatment. It was quick, painless, and I didn't set off any radiation detectors. However, my levels were going down so slowly from their astronomical level that they put me on propylthiouricil to help block the hormone production. That worked, but it completely took away my sense of taste. I ended up after major surgery having trouble eating because everything just tasted nasty.

As soon as my levels got down to normal I stopped the PTU (ticked off my snooty endocrinologist), and then all was well, It did take a couple of years for my levels to completely stabilize, but I've been on the same dose of levothyroxine for years now.

Well, the verdict is in....i will be having RAI on Friday.  I have a really good endo and together we feel this is the best decision.  Any info about your experiences would be appreciate!

I walked into the hospital, swallowed a pill with plenty of water, walked out, went home and shut myself in my room and stayed there a total of 5 days. Because I live with small children I had to distance myself from them for a total of 7 days. I could not sleep with my husband for 2 nights and I used a seperate bathroom from the rest of the household for those 5 nights. Except for not being able to get close and hold the little ones life resumed to normal after the 5 day confinement.
Monday night I go for my 6 month thyroid scan to make sure the therapy worked. I see the endo (with my blood work too) on Sept. 12. I had thyroid cancer and have malabsorption issues so I will be seeing alot of the endo.

All in all, I would say it was a fairly simple, easy process. Good luck

I had RAI on July 25th. Like Denita, I took a pill, went home, and stay there for several days. My doctor told me that I needed to be by myself in there for 7 days- hubby crashed on the couch all week. My sense of taste dulled for a couple of weeks (it's almost back completely, though) and my tongue felt "burned" for a week or so. Those were my only side effects (besides the boredom of being shut off by myself).

7 days? Whoa, I didn't think it would be that long! I thought it was more like 2. Guess I will see in the a.m. what they say. I think it depends on the level of radioactive iodine you get.

I am sending my teenaged boys to stay with my adult daughter across town for a few days. Hubby will be at work all day Friday and Sat. so I will kind of enjoy some alone time. I won't be seeing my grandbabies for a few days...sigh

My mom is worried about our 2 small dogs. I will ask in the morning to see what they say.

Hope I can sleep tonight....wait a minute...I never sleep much, so tonite probably won't be any different :)

We have 3 small dogs, and they had to stay out of the room. My doctor said to pretend that they are babies and follow that protocol.

My doctor was pretty adamant about the 7 days. I guess it does depend on the dose, though.

Woke up this morning after RAI treatment yesterday a.m. and I have a temp of 100.5. I hurt all over. Any idea if this has anything to do with RAI. In all my research I haven't seen anything like this.

Enjoy not being hyper! You have an advantage over many people who have RAI in that you have experience with treating hypothyroidism. From what I've seen on other boards, not all doctors treat hypothyroidism well, or help their patients transition gently to hypo past RAI.

I have went from hypo to hyper back to hypo. I went in for a check up this week and I am supper hyper. Is this how everyone else started out? They have taken me off my medication for a week and lowering the dose which I start from a week from today, thank you.

In its early stages, hashimoto can swing between phases of hypo and hyper.

What medication do you take ? and what dose ? for how long ?

I was taking synthroid 200 mcg
Right now I am hyper off all medication.
This happened yesterday.
My eye lashes are falling out
Heart beating wildly
Foggy
Grumpy
Sometimes I break out in a rash allergies?
Muscle weakness and muscle spasms
Joint pain
And water retention in other words I feel crudely and I won't even talk about the weight gain. I have always been small even with thyroid problems and now I am fat.

It's is very possible that all what you need is a reduction in the Synthroid dose, since 200 mcg/day is a hefty dose !
you need to reevaluate your levels in at least six weeks and decide from there what to do !

I started out hyper 20 years ago then hypo
It stayed stable and I was on a very high dose of synthoid between 175 to 200 this year it has been swinging. This part is new, except when I first started having problems. Hopefully after a week off medication and a new dose I will feel better. Thank you

Then it is not in its early stages !
What caused your initial hyper to become hypo? RAI? surgery?
According to our moderator Judy2 this can happen; needing to readjust the dose after a long period of being stable.

I in the other hand, was diagnosed seven years ago with hypo and still adjusting the dose !

Yes, just a few days ago. I learned that I have gone from hypo to hyper after 20 years. It seems my doctor has been over- medicating me. I started losing weight, couldn't sleep, heart palpitations, night sweats, nervous and more. My tsh is 0.048 and I am going for an ultrasound of my thyroid gland in a few days.
