Hi Judy,
I am 49 years old and was diagnosed with hypo 5 years ago. I was have my yearly physical and I had told my OBGYN that I was feeling really tired and had gained a few pounds. She asked me if I had ever had my thyroid tested, I told her I had and the results had always been negative (I had been tested when I was 23, 25 and 26 - each test result was negative for thyroid). My OBGYN said she believed the test results were incorrect and she wanted to test my thyroid again. She did and the results were negative again, she said she knew I had a thyroid problem because she was looking at my thyroid glad and it was tilted to one side. She ordered another test (she said it was a enzyme test) and the results were positive. She referred me to a Endocrinologist and he found that I had several nodules. I was placed synthroid (75 mcg) and my doctor ordered untrasounds of my thyroid every three months. After two years the nodules started growing rather quickly and several biopsies were taken, the results were negative for cancer, however I was told there could be cancer on the back side of the nodules (the area they could not reach for biopsy) and my doctor said the nodules had grown very quickly, so I decided to have my thyroid removed (I am unsure if the whole gland was removed or partially, I feel pretty stupid for not knowing). After everything I have read today I am going to contact my doctors office tomorrow and find out. Recently I have not been feeling myself, I have been overly tired and have had body aches I have never felt before. I am very active in my work and get winded now and several months ago I did the same activities and did not get tired or winded. I am wondering if possibly my recent blood results would tell me. I ask this, because I received my results via a letter from my physician in a letter form which starts with your test results are normal. It continues to break down the results three sections indicating there may be a problem. Specifically, MCV - Results are 101 H fL (the limits indicated next to these numbers show 80-98), MCH - 34.9H pg (the limits show 27.0 - 34.0) and TSH - 0.281L uIU/mL (the limits indicate 0.450-4.500). I am currently taking 125 mcg. synthroid alternating each day with 112 mcg synthroid.
My question is: Are these readings normal or "good thyroid hormone level" as my letter indicates or should I be questioning this?
Thank you.
