I'm new to the world of Thyroid issues but evidently I have an autoimmune thyroid disease and a 8 cm nodule that the Doctor wants to check in about 5 months.  I have elevated thyroglubulin AB antibodies and now after further searching on my part I have elevated liver numbers and that seems to be the doctors main concern.  He said it looks like autoimmune hepatitis caused by my thyroid...WTH?

Now I'm scheduled to see a hepatologist. 

Why don't they address the thyroid first?

My symptoms, main one being fatigue, I'm pretty good in the mornings and then bam it hits me, this fatgue just knocks me down, it's affecting my quality of life and marriage. I also have a low grade fever that comes on in the early afternoon and tends to linger into the evening. I have very tired eyes. My muscle's are sore most of the time but I do weight train. My pulse is low around 43-50 BPM. I do exercise when I can but this is still worrisome to me cause I feel like my energy level is drained. I'm a 37 yr old female.

Any insight or advice?

Hi Chiccam,

I had never heard of autoimmune hepatitis so I have been reading a little about it.

I am not a medical person, but just my personal opinion is that I think your doctor is

doing the right thing by referring you to a hepatologist. You really need to get

started on some type of treatment for the hepatitis asap. I never did find a

reference that it is caused by the thyroid, I wonder if he meant that since they are

both autoimmune diseases, they are both caused by something that is causing your

body to attack itself in different areas of the body.

You mentioned that you have elevated thyroglobulin antibodies. Do you know if your

TSH, free T3 and free T4 were checked? Do you know what the results are? If you

don't know the values I would definitely call and ask for the numbers. That should

give you a good idea if your thyroid is also causing the problems. Autoimmune

diseases cause fatigue, so it could be both the thyroid and hepatitis. Either one of

them or both could also be causing the  muscle and eye problems. I would also ask

if they checked the inflammation with a C reactive protein test and a sed rate.

Have you seen the hepatologist yet?  Please let us know what you found out and

what he recommends for treatment. I hope you can get some relief soon.

Treating the liver disease is primary, because it can have the quickest and most profound effects on your health. And in this wonderful world of autoimmune diseases, it's possible that the treatment for the liver could also have a good effect on the thyroid disease.

Sorry to hear you're having so many health problems all at once, and I hope you're feeling better soon. Please do keep us posted.

I've been posting more on the Hepatitis board as it seems a bit more active.

I meet with a Hepatologist at the end of the month and hopefully will begin to get answers.

I really wish that I would've pushed for a needle biopsy on my nodule. I hate not knowing if I have cancer growing in my neck or not.

Hi Chiccam,

Yes, this forum is not very active. I didn't realize that you are worried about cancer.

If that's the case, why don't you just ask for a needle biopsy, that would at least

give you peace of mind. The stess if probably making things worse for you.

One other thing I was thinking about is that you might try going gluten-free and see if

you notice any difference. Gluten has been implicated in Hashimoto's and is also thought

to play a role in other autoimmune diseases. It's not easy to give up but it might be worth

a try.

I think I'm just paranoid about cancer, as they found the AB antibodies which is common in cancer and Hashimoto's.

Gluten-free would be hard but doable if I noticed results. I do find that the days I do salad's and grilled chicken at lunch I tend not to crash as bad mid-afternoon, and my eyes don't feel as funky.

Right now my Doctor's priority is to have my Liver checked, as he believes I might have autoimmune Hepatitis, which is uncommon, but commonly found with auto-immune thyroid disease. Did that make sense?
I meet with a Hepatologist on friday and hopefully this ball will get rolling.
It's weird though. I'm feeling great today, better than I have for awhile. I hope it lasts.

Hi. I don't have any info but have to thank you: I've had elevated liver numbers, no symptoms, and my dr wants me to have an ultrasound. This is something I'll file in case things get complicated. Hope things fall into place.

I had more blood work and the Doctors are leaning towards AIH. I'm less freaked out than when I started this thread. I've read alot and spend time on the Hepatitis forum.
I go in for my ultrasound tomorrow for general measurements of liver and surrounding area. My case is being reviewed for an ultrasound liver biopsy due to presence of ANA and SMA. I'm just waiting for the call to set up the appt from the radiology dept.

CFS-glad this may have helped you. AIH is found in cases of Thyroid autoimmune disease so I would think a wise doctor would do further testing when ALT numbers are elevated.

I hope you are getting some answers. Thank you for bringing up this thread about autoimmune
hepatitis. I have never heard of it until you posted here. Like you said, it is found in cases of
thyroid autoimmune disease so it's important to inform people on this forum. Did you have
any symptoms? Have you started any treatment for your Hashimoto's?
