I am new to the board and have recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  I started on Synthroid yesterday and am having a lot of very loud ringing in my ears.  I already had tinnitis but not to this degree.

Could it be the Synthroid?  I am very sensitive to all medications and also have MCS, as well as CFS.  If I'm not able to tolerate Synthroid, what should my next step be?  Thanks for any advice.

I haven't had this problem, but have heard of it happening. Most seem to be relieved with a change from synthroid to Armour, which is made from dried pork thyroids.

Tinnitus can also be an autoimmune disorder that exists concurrently with hypothyroidism but isn't caused by it.

Interestingly, I had heard silver fillings contribute to tinnitus. Had all my silver fillings out a few months ago because they were old, took a detox powder for a few weeks, and only notice some ear ringing if I drink alcohol or coffee now. I can even hear my clock ticking while I lay in bed at night... for the first time in a long time. I wonder how many tinnitus sufferers have silver fillings and if there really is a corelationship. I also have been diagnosed w/ hypothyroidism and have read about a connection with that and silver fillings. There may be something to it....

Thank you Judy and Kim for your replies. I am going to try the synthroid for a few more days and if it continues, I'll call my doctor and see if they'll prescribe armour. I've head that a lot of people have success with it.

I've had tinnitis since childhood, so I don't think fillings are the problem. I must have an autoimmune problem. I've always had health problems. I don't remember ever having much energy.

I had mono and lots of infections in childhood as well as low blood sugar. Now I have CFS/FM, arthritis, diabetes, low thyroid ibs, and the list goes on!

memaw12- looking over your list of health issues, I'm wondering if you have ever thought of experimenting with going gluten-free. I have had IBS issues throughout my life, and they almost immediately improved after going GF last August. I feel so much better. As an aside, it was also by eliminating grains and processed sugar six years ago that helped me get rid of UC symptoms (following an antifungal program). Grains and sugar feed fungus. Wheat and corn are commonly contaminated with mycotoxins (fungal poisons). Antibiotics are mycotoxins. (Who among us has never been on an antibiotic?) Fungus causes disease.

Gluten/grains have been linked to thyroid issues, diabetes, tinnitus, etc. I learned about wheat(gluten) and disease, particularly thyroid issues, after reading Wheat Belly. Every body is different, and reacts differently to interventions, but perhaps GF may be worth consideration if you're looking for ideas to try to feel better. Hope you feel better soon. I would also recommend asking about Armour. I have been told that I can't take that, supposedly, since I have Hashimoto's Disease.

You know, I know this thread is a little old but Tinnitus was one of the first major symptoms I can remember before I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. I have always had sinus problems (get constant sinus infections) and one year I got a bad sinus infection that went into my lymph-nodes and then ever since then I've had tinnitus and it drives me absolutely insane ... nobody could ever tell me why I had it but just said "your brain will adjust" - well 7 years later and I still haven't adjusted! But, I notice the pitch changes all the time and it gets louder or the normal sounds around me will have this sudden change like someone turned the volume down on the real world and then turned the volume up on my high pitched ringing... I have to stick my finger in my ear and yawn a lot to get it to go back down.

I am wondering if I should try gluten free but I have been tested for gluten allergies and it always came back negative... can you still be sensitive to gluten and not have those tests come back positive? My endo was actually thinking maybe I had Celiac disease so, perhaps its worth trying out...
