nausea with Synthroid?

I have been on Synthroid for 7 months now. I have nausea off and on ALL DAY ever since I started it. I feel like when I eat it is better. The first time I mentioned it to my ENDO. Dr. he thought it was the Syntroid and didnt want to raise my dose yet. Now he will not answere when I tell him about it, Yes I am getting a new Dr. But everyone I ask on Synthroid has not had nausea with it at all. AS you can see by my profile I have enough to deal with and the nausea is really getting on my ever last nerve. Just wondered if anybody else has this problem? I need to figure out what is causing it because I cant get my Drs. to address it. smhair Ive spent OUT OF POCKET 2000.00 since January. I have insurance that has paid also . I need my 3 year colonscopy but now they have that lovely loophole that if you have polyps it is not peventive it is a procedure so I will have to pay 20% of that  too. My point is all that money and I feel TERRIBLE! Cabt even work right now. SO if it is the Synthroid causing the nausea maybe I can help mu Drs. fix one problem anyway.

I've never had nausea with synthroid, either name or generic.

No nausea here either. I have been on it since 2001.

Thanks for the reply. I missed adose Saturday night, no nausea all day Sunday. I see the Endo Dr. Thursday. Last time before my new Dr. to get levels. My vitamin D level has been low, Im going to check symptoms of that right now.

I have read that NSAIDS can cause drug interactions with Synthroid and that is why I am only allowed to take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) with it.  My doctors told me it could cause nausea among other things if I mixed the 2 drugs.

I have never had problems with nausea with the Synthroid even when the dose was higher.

Also, make sure you are taking it on an empty stomach, about 1 hour before you eat.  When taken with food, it can interfere with the absorption of the meds and cause other issues.

Thank-you so much Palmy. I cannot take Tylenol, high liver levels. I think from all the Tylenol and other meds. I have taken to keep working. I cant even take Nsaids when on Savella for my fibro. I am at my breaking point trying to feel better without overdosing on meds. Trying physical theray now but she is wanting to stop it cause it is just making me worse. I will check out the web page. Ive got to figure out something for pain real soon before I crack. Thanks again.

My dose of Levothyroxin was just upped from 100 mcg to 125 mcg and I have been on it for 4 days.  Been nauseous ever since.  The only time I feel ok is when I sit still.  Whenever I move I feel like I just got off a hyperspeed merry go round.  Not sure what to do.  Wondering if this will go away after my body adjusts or should I see the doc?  Also wanted the other person experiencing nausea to know they are not alone...

I finally stopped having nausea but I also cannot take nsaids or tylenol anymore. Scared of tramadol too. I now am getting cortisone shots every 3 months and just going to bed with pain. But ayt least my nausea is gone. Thanks for reply. Hopefully yours will go away but mine took almost a year.

I am taking 75 mcg of Synthroid for over a month now. I have noticed that after about 6 hours I get a sudden burst of elevated body temperature which is later followed by total nausea. I also feel like I just came off some horrible merry go round ride. I only feeling relief when lying still. I am going to make a doctor appointment to discuss these two issues along with some other concerns associated with the medication. I don't take any other medications with my Synthroid so it can't be any drug interaction, and I take it first thing in the morning with a full glass of water then wait an hour before breakfast.

Great advice idk...my_motto! I'm glad I read that, it makes a lot of sense. It's something I hadn't thought about, but I will be sure to look into that now.

Normal- I feel your pain, literally! I have only been on the (generic) Synthyroid (25mg a day) and I'm very frustrated as well. I'm nauseous about 75% of the time. I also have Fibro. At first I thought the nausea was from Tramadol, so I stopped it and sure enough, still there. I want to ask, why do you say you're scared of Tramadol? I must say it helped me out quite a bit for a couple weeks, but after that I had to switch to a different pain med because the Tramadol stopped working for me. I don't think that it is supposed to lose its potency that quickly, so what happened with me is not too common I don't think. Maybe you could give it a try and see if it gives you any relief? My Rheumy said I could even take Acetaminaphen with it if needed, which leads me to believe might be a safer option for your liver. I'm not certain, but I do hope you can find something that helps!

I also cannot take NSAIDs, and I fear that before to long my liver will be affected as well. I just read your info and we seem to have a lot in common, (unfortunately its all health problems). I have been diagnosed with IBS, Fibro, hypothyroidism, Vitamin D deficiency, etc. I'm going to see a "Lyme literate" doctor in Feb. I had one positive test and one negative, and so I decided it would be best to get a second opinion from a Lyme specialist.

Anyway, I'm starting to ramble, but I truly hope you find some relief very, very soon.

What is your dosage of Synthyroid, and are you still taking it? I hope something I am taking will start to help soon. I'm in pain, I'm constantly freezing, always tired (except at night, thanks Insomnia)... My list of symptoms has quickly turned into an epic tale...

Have you started taking a Vit D supplement? How low are your levels? Mine are pretty low so I've been taking 50,000iu Vit D twice a week for 6 weeks now. So far it hasn't seemed to improve any symptoms, just as the thyroid med has done nothing yet.

Another reason why I'm seeing the Lyme doc. I'm convinced I have something underlying causing all of this, I'm only 32 and was always active and healthy before all of this stuff started.

 I love this forum. Thank you all so much for your replys! It really does help to know others understand. My new internist that I actually have had for a year doesnt seem to listen or care. MY rhuemy Dr. tries so hard to balance nd treat all but stupid druggies abused some of the pain meds so he was under investigation for months. He didnt give me pain meds intill tried tens, therapy, and prventative so I was lost without him to getcortizone shots and actually address my problems. Will see hm in Jan. but my work finally made me go on disability(said I came to work when I could not do the job) No duh I could not afford to miss. Anyway I am without medical insurance and 60% of my pay. Now I have to just take Hydrocodone and my Synthroid and a new prescription for IBS. My liver enzymes are higher then ever so not sure how long I can have the Hydrocodone.

  Lymer I was taking Tramadol with alot of other meds when My bursitis was so painful and my arm and legs went totally numb, thought I was having a stroke. It started with my tounge and mouth being numb then spread.

    Now my internist thinks we need to re check everyhting for diagnosis! Right like I can afford thousands of dollars to have all the xrays, mris, blood work, all the test done over. I have spent all I have and now jsut have to try and be happy with what I have.

   I seriously think that the Synthroid causes the upset stomach. Still have it occasionally but just another thing I have to live with. I was trying to take the mind or signal changing drugs like Cymbalta and Savella to not bother liver but now I know they are even worse. Meds over a long time just mess with your body. Take care all and have a Merry Christmas.

I have a friend who takes it when she goes to bed so the nausea was gone by morning. Just a thought.
I never had a prob with it on synthroid but I think I am on Tirosint.

I started taking synthroid of a night and felt better but internist said was suppose to take of a morning for it to help with energy. I dont have nausea all the time now. It is rare BUT when it happens I have to go to bed or start vomiting. A few days ago my throid noduales started swelling and I amtrying to get in to have them checked. Was suppose to have it done last March but they couldnt get me in for 2 months and I lost my insurance by then.

I have bad nausea (been taking synthroid 25mcg for about 10 days. I also feel agitated and it is almost worse than hypo symtoms. I have taken gravol ginger and drink ginger tea and then finally .5mg of ativan (which works for a while) but then it is back. I hope this eases up soon.

It takes about six weeks for the effects of synthroid to become apparent, so it likely isn't the medication, unless you have some sort of allergy to the binding material in it. Most people seem to say the nausea eases with time; if not, you may need to try a different preparation such as Armour or Naturethroid. These are made from dessicated pig thyroid and work better for some people.

confused I have been on Synthroid for about 6 weeks now. Dx with hypothyroidism when lithium levels were too high. up to today i have had no severe side effects. sunday and monday i did not take it because i ran out waiting for the VA to mail my script. i got the bottle in the mail today about 4:30 and took my normal dosing. holy cannolli am i sick. severe nausea/ dry heaves/ vomiting. i feel better lying down or sitting up a bit. i'm also sweating, pale, and experiencing mild tremors, jerky muscles, bounding heart every so often. i get all my care through the va so it better well be a life or death issue before i go to a civ hospital or i will billed out the wazoo.
i need to work on my profile. I'm a 17 year Navy vet (retired). Bipolar DO, GAD DO, PTSD due to Military Sexual Trauma, Hypothyroidism, insomnia due to anxiety, migraines due to stress. I am a prisoner in my very own brain.

First, are you sure your Lithium levels are okay now, and that you've been consuming the required amount of sodium? I ask this because Lithium is much more unstable in the body.

Synthroid is very stable and the effects of dosage changes are not apparent for about six weeks, but I do have two thoughts: first, if you took it in the afternoon you perhaps had food in your stomach? It's recommended to be taken on an empty stomach. Second, if the tablets look different, perhaps the VA has changed contractors and has a different generic brand of levothyroxine. Some people will react differently to dyes and binding agents in drugs.

Is there a VA clinic anywhere nearby? I live in East Tennessee, and there are VA outpatient clinics in many of the smaller towns here. I don't know if they would be available for an urgent care situation, but you could check.

we have a va here and i called today to see if my concerns were in anyway worrisome or i was just having a crapty day. my belly was empty...i ate about 5 hrs before taking it but within 1/2 hour i was knock down sick. i have been taking off of the lithium as soon as all the abnormal blood tests were normal. i've been feeling well today. no nausea but still very tired when i exert myself like walking through the mall. stoopid thyroid...

I am on 75mg of Synthroid. I don't have any side effects other then I can't seem to loose weight but I do get gaining. I have changed my eating habits and walk at least 2 miles every night.

It's very frusrtrating because the endo said I have gained weight because of my thyroid
.

Any suggestions would help

Just my experience...I have hypothyroidism, osteonesis (step before osteoprosis), depression and neurological disorder called rsd, facet lumbar syndrome. Currently I'm on morphine (last 2 years), cymbalta, vit d supplements and slow release calcium. I thought many of my problems were from the rsd & facet syndrome. Turns out I had low tsh levels, led to ultrasound which led to biopsy of the 4x2cm complex nodule. It wasn't cancer however I should be having it removed in 3-4 months. Anyway, I started on 25mcg of synthyroid. My doc wanted name brand only because of the issues....weight gain, migraines daily, extreme fatigue, hair loss, slight nausea, brain fog, bone pain, etc. I have been on the synthroid for 8 days now. I do have more energy & less pain. But oh my the continual nausea is horrid!!!!! My doc warned me about this but I never thought it would get this bad! Yuck. I am having daily headaches still too.
