TPO level still extremely high, even after other Thyroid test levels have normalized

Hi,

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos thyroiditis in early May after going in with many symptoms, and after lab tests I got pretty extreme test results- so much so that my DR said he hadn't seen numbers like mine and 'didn't know how I was functioning'. (TSH 143, Free T3 1.55, T4 1.7 and TPO greater than 600)

I have since been taking Nature Throid, Iodine, Vitamin D and a few other things and just had my follow up blood work done, about 2 months post initial diagnosis. Dr told me that all my levels have normalized EXCEPT for my TPO, which they did an exact number on this time, and it's 2190!

Dr who is treating me is not an Endocrinologist, but he is putting in a call to an Endocrinologist to see why my TPO levels could still be so extremely elevated, even after the rest of my number has normalized, but I won't hear back right away, and I just wondered if anyone else has experienced these kind of results?

Wow! And i thought my TPO was high at 105. (Normal is under 35).

Are you taking selenium? I started taking 200mcg a few weeks ago, and at my last blood test, my TPO was down to 85. I can't say that the selenium is what caused the drop, but I am optimistic that it helped.

With numbers off the charts like that, I would probably have seen an endocrinologist for the followup. Not that I am saying that your doctor isn't qualified to treat you, but the specialized expertise of an endocrinologist may be more beneficial to you at this point in time.

Also, I am curious about Nature-Throid. Is there a reason why your doctor chose that over the much more common synthetic thyroid (Synthroid/Levothroid/levothyroxine)? I checked my insurance coverage and Nature-Throid is 1/4th the cost of Levothroid/levothyroxine. And my last lab results - my free T4 is at the upper end of normal, my free T3 is in the middle of the normal range, and my TSH is still high, over 4. My endocrinologist would like it to be under 2, but increasing the Synthroid would probably push my free T4 number higher. I am currently taking 75mcg, the next dosage up is 88mcg. The dosages for Nature-Throid are obviously different, since it includes both T4 and T3. Probably the two grain Nature-Throid would be the closest for me, it contains 76mcg of T4 and 18mcg of T3.
