Please help. Really sick with fibro/cfs or hypothyroidism or something else????

Hi, for 2.5 years I've had really bad flare-ups that:

-always start with a sore throat
-last up to 5 weeks
-sometimes only have days or weeks in between each flare-up
-include bad body aches and fatigue with SEVERE malaise
-cause my face to droop and look pale
-cause dark circles and bags under my eyes
-end abruptly (one day I'll just wake up and be fine)


What does this sound like to you? I feel like I have the worst flu ever, and like I'm going to die. I've been sick the last 7 out of 9 weeks. I can't take much more of this!

Please post the thyroid related blood tests (TSH) with reference ranges and we will try to interpret them for you !

Hi hypo:

*TSH, S was 5.2 but then I stopped taking Magnesium in the morning and a month later it was 0.8
*Thyroxine, Free (S) 1.5
*TPO Antibodies 0.4

We need to see the reference ranges for FT4 and anti TPOab .
But, both your TSH tests are not normal, 5.2 is hypo and 0.8 is hyper.
You need to test for TGab also, if either of TPOab and TGab is positive then you have hashimoto, which can be associated with both hypo or hyperthyroidism.

Consult with your doctor and ask to be referred to an endo, you might want to repeat the test in 6-8 weeks .

I forgot to mention that I had Graves Disease in 2002, then radioactive iodine to kill my thyroid...now hypo on levothyroxine.

OK, since you took RAI 150 might not be too much, but your TSH tests are not normal, as I said, 0.8 is hyper and 5.2 is hypo.

Ask to be referred to an endo to adjust your dose of Levo !

After RAI, you should expect to be hypo and your pituitary gland will sense that and produce more TSH to try to kick-start the thyroid. However, the pituitary also recognizes the replacement hormone (levo) and should respond to it by reducing the TSH level.

To assure uniform absorption of the levo, remember to take it on an empty stomach. For some people this is much more important than for others. If your body isn't absorbing all of your medication you could get fluctuations like this.
